Joy.

First long range road trip and...

Thankfully under warranty still. Was making horrendous squeaking and creaking, just thought I'd check in with LR Asheville to see if I would make it home. To my shock, they said "No, you won't" (!) Good thing I checked...

I can't say enough good things about Dale at LR Asheville, knew his stuff, for once, got me back on my way home in 30 mins, actually disconnected my drive shaft, making me 2wd and for want of ABS for the rest of the way.

LR Cape Fear (home) is gonna fix on Wed.

I take it this is not uncommon? They said these can also self destruct and take out your catalytic or even your oil pan in the process. Should I just plan on this happening in another 43k?

My first 'issue'. No I feel like I belong..

Jeff

My front didn't go until just over 80k miles. It was at the very end of a 2000 mile road trip. It got me home but was vibrating. Had them replaced in 1 day.

Yes Jeff,

You are a lucky man. There are many others on this BBS that have experienced this failure. Mine failed at 46K. Others have failed earlier and with much more collateral damage.

replace with a servicable u joint (with a grease fitting). every other oil change i pump some fresh grease in them and they have become little happy joints.
while the shaft is off have them do the other one at the other of that shaft. fairly easy once you drop the shaft.

This is very common on the D2's. The u-joints are not servicable and your best bet would be to replace with servicable joints to keep it from happening in another 40-50k miles.

this is very uncommon, they usually break much further from home.

I have a '95 D1 which none of its u-joints have been greased for at least 100K miles. The front propshaft u-joint closest to the transfer case has the zerk nipple broken off!

No catastrophic problems, so I guess someone really is looking out for (some of) us idiots!

Oh, I bought a grease gun and grease yesterday and greased all 3 zerks on the truck. Front driveshaft comes off Friday and double-carden propshaft goes on.

My friend's 99d2 with 70k front u-joint let go at around 80mph in thick traffic while passing a tractor/trailer. The propshaft stayed in place but the rest of the parts flew back. LR fix quote: $4400
To make things worse, he has no extended warranty and had just quit his job the day before. It had been making a vibration under acceleration that would begin at 32mph. He kept asking what it could be. I said u-joint. He said he would take it in. Never did. Now he supposedly needs a new transmission according to LR. If you think your truck has any type of symtom, have it checked if you do not know what it could be. Better to catch things before a failure!

Absolutely! Coming home from a long trip, mine started to vibrate. Crept home very slowly with a not so happy wife. Next day they were out and replaced, all four in fact. No need to take that kind of a chance.
I was lucky and it held together until I made it home. Others grenade without prior warning, ouch! For those who do get warned (vibrations) and do nothing, well I won’t weep over their extra carnage.
