I searched the archives, and I have found many discussions on CDL's that won't lock due to lack of use, but couldn't find anything on a CDL that is stuck in the locked position. Its always been easy to get locked, and always a pain to unlock. After some fairly tough wheeling this past weekend it will not come out of the locked position. After literally an hour of trying I finally gave up and removed the front drive shaft to make the trip home. I am planning to tear the shift linkage apart to see if the problem is there, but before I spend half a day doing that, I wanted to see if any one here has had this happen? Is it probably the linkage, or is something more sinister going on? Chip '97 D1 |

If the lever will not move, then it is probably the linkage. If you can move the lever and it will not unlock, did you try backing up? To unlock.

On my truck something broke on the top of the transfer case where the linkage goes in. I pulled of the shifter boot and removed the 4 screws on top of the case. I removed the plate. There were broken peices in there, I don't know where they came from. Aparentley they held down a spring loaded ball looking thing. The "ball" moves the linkage side to side to lock and unlock the case. On mine the spring was pushing the "ball" up so it was missing the linkage, so it was the shaft rubbing the linkage in stead. By the shaft hitting the linkage it would push the linkage over far enough to unlock or sometimes lock the the case. (maybe this will make sence when you look in there) What I did to fix it is kindda shotty, but it works. I pushed the "ball" down with a screw driver and used nylon ties as spacers. I used about 4 ties between the ball and the "Hump" on the shifter to hold the ball in place. I did everything from inside the truck. |

The lever will move, but only from Locked Low to Locked High. Thanks Will. I will give that a quick peek before I start tearing too much apart. |

If the lever will only move from locked low to locked high, then you do have linkage problem. I would take the center concole out and have a look, it only takes about 10 minutes or so to remove all the stuff and get to the Diff lever. Here is a good link on how to fix the diff lever. http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/efe4/images/rover/difflock/discodifflock.htm |

Just happened to a truck I was wheeling with this past weekend. It seems to be that the problem is the shift solenoid 90% of the time. This is the soleniod that is energized when the is in P or N to allow you to shift the t-case. We just removed and by passed it. |

Also, you will find a cone of insulation when you remove the console it runs throughout but if you cut out the cone around the shifter it makes things a little smoother sometimes. |
