Damn,
Starter died. Its been having trouble engaging but now it will not engage the flywheel at all. It just sits there and spins. And they are like $200 for a rebuilt one. Actually I can get a NEW Marelli unit for about $200. Is that find or should I stick with Bosch?
Has anyone tried rebuilding one. The motor is fine but it wont engage anymore. Just spins. Plenty of cranking juice though. Is there any spring kit that you can use to replace the clutch spring with a new one and lube everything up?
Thanks

If just the solenoid is shot, I bet you can find that for not alot of money.....

I had mine rebuilt maybe year and a half ago no trouble since. The cost was around a 100.00 alot cheaper than a rebuilt off the shelf but same quality I feel. Also when I had it rebuilt it came with a year warranty. This is in FL so maybe the price is cheaper then up North.

Hmm,
NOt sure if there are any local rebuilders. I'll have to research it and see. If not, can we rebuild these ourself? I'm very curious to get my paws in there and see whats wrong with it. Sinch it spins fine its got to be a spring or a worm gear thats not engaging correctly.
Any Ideas? Thanks

If starter spins, but does not engage, normally just solenoid is shot - easy to replace yourself once you get the part. Google under bosch starter and I bet you can find a solenoid.

Bill,
Thanks for the second post. I guess I'm confused. I thought the point of the Solenoid was to tell the starter to spin. (Also thought it changed the voltage or something) I guess I'm mistaken. What does the Solenoid DO? I thought that the starter engages automatically but haveing a worm gear that the drive gear slides down when the start spins and then when you release power it slides back into storage position. Thats the way my JetSki and Motorcycle were at least.
Also, do the "NEW" starters come with new Solenoids or is that always a seperate part.
Thanks
Todd

Solenoid is what allows that spring driven gear to engage/disengage - if the solenoid is bad, then it will not allow that to happen and starter motor will just spin.

A new starter will always have a new solenoid (unless it is Ford or something that has a remote solenoid). Heat from manifolds is generally what kills the solenoid.

Good luck,
Bill

I dont believe you are correct. My experience with solenoids and a quick call to confirm with a mechanic is that the solenoid is simply a switch "high amp relay" of sorts. A small 12v signal from the Ignition switch and it puts all 600amps or whatever it needs to the starter itself. The engagement of the clutch portion is still mechanical.
However, I pulled the starter and it seems I'mincorrect. I think my motor is toast afterall. Weith the starter disconnected I can clearly see the clutch engage and the motor try to spin but it spins very slow. I think I just need a new one.

Thanks for the help though. Still Unsure about the Solenoid thing.
