I just bought a 94 disco I and my shop manual hasnt arrived yet.. I hear a clicking sound when i turn... someone sugested that i check the oil in my swivel balls and flush them and fill them and it may clear the problem up. i have never seen or heard of a swivel ball untill i got a disco.. are they only on this vehicle? I took the drain plug out and a little water drained .... it didnt taste too bad.. but the caramel that came out after smelled funny and tasted really really bad. i had to use an air copressor attached to the fill hole to get it to come out. I only got about a 1/4 cup and then it was empty... i them filled the swivel ball up untill it wouldnt take anymore.. it took almost a quart and i used synthetic.. can anyone tell me what the proper fill level is and what the usual method of flushing is? also is 90 weight gear oil the right stuff to use? I have only done one side so far. It would probably make sense to get new swivel ball seals .. anyone know how much i should expect to pay for them and where the best place to get them is? thanks for the replys in advace!

Sounds like they were water contaminated (ie: choclate milk) - there are three plugs - fill (top), level (middle) and drain (bottom). Open the level plug and fill from the top until oil comes out the level plug.

90wt is fine, but you're wasting expensive synthetic, because you'll either want to drive for a bit, then flush again, and maybe again. Otherwise, tear down the swivel and clean it from the inside. If the CV joints is already making noise, you might be in there sooner than you think.

Also - check wheel bearings for play - this can make noises also - as well as a host of other things.

Bill

PS - solid axle land cruisers also have swivel balls (not sure about solid axle Toy p/ups)

Jeremy -

discountrovers.com is a good place to get your swivel ball seals. Generally the LR dealer will charge you up the ass for parts. So plan ahead if you need to order parts online.

Also, filling the balls till the fluid starts coming out is a good sign that they are full.
Make sure to clean around the balls real good, and apply some silicon to the threads on the nuts to keep a good seal.

Your cd went out today and should get to you by Fri (Sat at the latest).

If you over fill these they will blow oil out the seal. You need to drain to the level hole and run a couple days. Drain and refill. You really need to rebuild the ball with new seals and gaskets or you are going to be in the same boat very soon. The rebuild the first time should take 6-8 hours. The next side will go much faster.

Mine were klicking and I got lucky. My CV joints were ok, but the had a rusty brown film in the inside where the balls are. I cleaned and refitted with no problems. I went with the Land Rover One Shot grease to keep the leaks down. Since this is my daily driver and I put alot of road miles on my disco. Alot of the guys like to stay with oil. If you ever have to drain one you'll know why they stay with oil. The grease do not like to drain out. If there is water in the ball it is hard to tell with grease. It is your choice.

If it were me, I would tear these down and replace as soon as you can or you are going to have major problems very soon with water in and oil out.

Also, get the hub nut socket. It will make taking off the hubs so much faster. Unless you have 2 1/16 socket just laying around.
