I have noticed that if I am accelerating quickly and letting the engine rev to say 4500 rpms or above before shifting that it will stumble at about 3500 and the revs will drop a few hundred then continue on accelerating. It feels almost like the torque converter unlocks to shift but then doesn't, so it relocks. Basically it goes like this...smooth from idle to 3500 drops to 3200 then smooth until 4500. Should I be concerned?
Thanks, Matt

Mine goes all the way up to 5k with no stumbles. So, no, I don't think that is normal.

if when u are getting up to speed on hills it seems to happen more because you are giving it faster rpms and it feels like someone just shut the gas off for a second and then it kicks back in it is probably the vehicle speed sensor . do a search on it you will see many similar people having the same problem i had it and new vss runns like new again

If it was a Disco I, which I see it is not. I would say VSS or Fuel filter, but being a Disco II, I doubt it is the fuel filter.

Of course if it was me I would find a way to add one.

Thanks for the replies guys, it is not still under warranty. When I put the trans in sport mode it is really not noticeable, but it is still there. In normal, it is very noticeable. It could be the VSS but it runs perfectly other than this. Also, the speedo works fine and so does the cruise. I think it has something to do with a sensor or computer. What kind of things could be in the trans that could cause it-any?

not to dwell on the vss but when mine first started going my cruise worked too and it didn't happen that often and the speedo was fine also. but sure enough it started happening more often and the rpms would start reving up and down while coasting down hills and then bang speedo went out and all hell broke loose. this all took 2 months to progress to the last part

good way to tell is just unplug vss and go for a ride you won't have a speedo but if it is the vss your problem will go away

Matt, mine does a somewhat similar thing on a particular slope on the way home from work. Its very steep and I start off in 1st, and hold it there for a while. Otherwise it tries to change to 2nd, then hesitates, and changes back to first again, its like it tried to change but decided it couldn't after all. This may be part of a dumb algorithm in the tcu I dunno. Is it possible yours is doing a similar thing in higher gears?

Just curious, where is the VSS located so I could unplug it and see if that makes a difference?
Thanks

a little plug between the transfer case and drum brake , just look up between them and you will see it hope you have skinny fingers to get to it and you will need a skinny screw driver to help pop off the connector snap. like i said you will lose your speedo and cruise while you test is but your tach will still work to let you know your rmps

unplugging and plugging back in is a 2 minute job if it is the vss one 3/16 alen head socket with 2 ,,6" extensions to get it off to replace and some swearing and dust in the eyes to put the little bugger up in that god forsaken tiny space.

Well I got under there today and there wasnt a plug where John described it. I saw a capped place where it could have been, so they must have moved it on the D2. There is a round plug with about 8 or so orange wires going into the trans towards the back before the t-case....could this be it? Thanks
