my mechanic, who is not a dealer but has started working on land rovers about one year ago, says that the security system has immobilized the vehicle. he has an after market computor program called Rovacom to read the codes but does not have the right computor program to reset the system or to clear the fault. he says we have to ship it to a dealer which either in Spokanne WA or Salt Lake, or Denver to actually fix it, he says they have the correct computor set up called Test Book at the dealer. he is open to any suggestions, Is there a way to circumvent this problem. Help any advise? Is there any short cut to mobilizing the vehicle? by the way i am in montana so shipping it to a dealer is the last thing i want to do.

Sheila,

There are a couple of ways.
Here is what the manual says:

1. Place the handset in close proximity to the starter switch with the starter switch turned on.
2. Pressing unlock button on handset.
3. Pressing lock button on handset with starter switch turned on.
4 Entry of EKA code using the key.

I would check the battery in the handset too. I am not sure this is what you are looking for but I hope it helps.

Ken

sorry, forgot to add, the mechanic said he did all these except he wasn't sure on #4. things my discovery is doing when trying to start it. it turns over when you turn the key there is no power to the coils there is fuel pressure and there is no check engine light on, the anti-theft light glows constantly when the door is open. the computor is reading that that the vehicle is being taken. my mechanic asked if he does 1-4 properly and it still does not work is there a way to by pass the anti-theft. if not what next?

Before bringing it to the dealer, one last shot is to talk to Land Rover Owner Care.

It seems like the problem might be "code" related. But give it a shot, their phone# is 800 637 6837.

I had a problem with my 97 starting a few weeks ago (drowned the engine). The engine was turning over, gas was flowing, but no power to the coils. I asked the dealer if the anti-theft could have been triggered and they said the engine wouldn't even turn over if that was the case. Mine turned out to be the ECU.

Thank gawd, NO! A new ECU at the LR dealer was...gulp....$2200!!! Finding the right one used is almost impossible. According to the LR dealer, different years have different ECUs, and some years have multiple ECU's for that year and fidning the right ECU is dependent on the VIN of your vehicle. Then, the ECU's aren't as simple as drop a new one in and go - the LR dealer has to "program" it before the vehicle will ever start is what I was told.

I took my ECU out and opened her up. You could see where water had been getting in around the ECU connector/body area (not through the plugs themselves). Even though the circuit bds are silicon sprayed, those coatings are never 100% effective (I have direct experience with those coatings in my profession). The LR engineers must have had a major brain fart when they designed the ECU: the body frame is covered with 2 metal plates and has absolutley no sealing - they were obviously depending on the coating to take care of that - bad idea guys! That box needs better water proofing than it currently has, or better yet, moved into the passenger compartment. I ran a bead of RTV silicon around those plates and around the connector bases and buttoned it back up. There is a small breather hole in the very bottom of the ECU to allow for heat expansion and shouldn't allow water into a truely sealed box, so this should be fine.

Yeah, basically - opened 'er up and let 'er get a bit of a tan in the sun.

Actually the low voltages normally present on circuit boards (5V & 12V) doesn't normally cause circuit damage if it's gotten wet - it will just kill it for a while. But with the spark signal coming from the ECU, I don't know what kind of voltage/current that is, so all bets are off.

Sheila, check the fuses - there are TWO that power the spider box (immobilizer), and absence of either will kill the ignition. Does your remote work, or you have to use your key to get into the car?

FWIW, if you can buy Rave CDs, they have excellent electric diagrams.
