I have a 2001 Series II and the traction control, hill descent, and ABS lights are all on in the dash. I took the Disco in once, due to a recall and it was fixed. Then about a month ago they came on again. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the wheel sensor and said that was the problem. Then about a week later, it happened again and now Land Rover tells me that since I put brakes on it and didn't use the OEM parts, that it is the brakes chattering causing the sensor to stay on. They say there is some bulletin that if they replace the sensor and it doesn't fix the problem and if there are non-oem brakes, that the brakes could be causing the problem. They say that I have to put the OEM brakes on in order for them to fix it. MY question is, can I just take that damn sensor out and be done with it. They told me not to be in a hurry to bring it in because nothing would happen if it was driven so do I need that thing? Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Chad

welcome to the club. i had my light on and off for abouta year, then on steady for a couple months. I finally got my dealer to admit that the abs pump cant handle offroading with the cdl locked. i took that to mean that it just isnt strong enough. something can and will happen. if you dont want abs/tc/hdc, then pull the fuse or take the whole system out. better brakes should help the system work better. if you want it fixed under warranty, put the original braks back on and take it in to them. also check the lines and make sure they are in good condition. i ripped one a couple times.

Flounder,

Do you really wanna do that? You could lose the HDC, fine, but on a wet road and an emergency stop the ABS is nice to have, and off-road the ETC does have some value, especially if you combine it with the CDL (if you have it).

Since its under warrantee, I'd get it fixed at their expense, its worth putting on a set of OEM brakes isn't it?

I've got a '99 DII with 115k miles with the same 3 lights on intermitantly since 80k miles. The dealer quoted me $2200 to replace the "ABS Modulator Assembly". The lights come on more and more now - almost every time I drive now. I have had the CDL hooked up for the last 15k miles and have noticed that whenever I lock the diff (even in the driveway!) it seems to set off the frenzy of lights for the next few weeks. I'm trying to figure out should I replace the pump - and have it fail again, or forget traction control and abs and put lockers in??? If I did lockers I'd probably find the diff's need some work (due to 115k miles of wear) and that the half shafts would need to be upgraded. So, what's everyone's opinions??? And, do they make stronger half shafts for the DII? How much $$$???

frank,
GBR has heavy duty axles for the d2 $600. you can run lockers with etc, if its locked, the wheels are movign the same speed, so etc does not sense a problem and does not try to do anything.

flounder, (animal house fan?)
try to get it fixed under warranty while you still can. youll probably find that the dealer is full of crap and the brakes had nothing to do with it, but if they will look for a scapegoat everytime so its good to limit their choices.

Thanks guys, I think I'll do the pads and take it back. If that doesn't fix it, I already informed them that they would be reimbursing me for the pads plus my labor. I just wasn't sure if it was some b.s. light that came on. Even the service tech said the bulletin was bs but he has to do what he's told.

Flounder was the nickname in college as everyone guessed.
