After driving the disco for about 20 minutes, a sound develops from the underside. When I'm in park or nuetral, it goes away, with an occasional squeak. When placed in drive, the sound is audible. I was able to record the sound and attach to this post. Thanks in advance!

hmm, does it definitely come from under your truck, or is it coming from the engine bay? if it is the whining/grinding sound I hear, sort of sounds like my power steering pump before the bearings on it ruptured. see if you can try to isolate where it is coming from a little better. |

Robbie, before the bearings ruptured, did the whining/grinding sound come after driving around a bit or right away after starting? I was thinking it was coming from underneath, but now that you mentioned it, I will check when I get home. thanks! |

That does sound like a bearing, best bet get a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver to your ear and listen to each part for noise. (and make sure your buddy doesnt let go of brake) |

initially, when they first started going bad, it was in and out. you'd hear at times, or you wouldn't. eventually, it was full on continuous. try listening around like wayne says, see if you can isolate it. when i put the stethoscope up to the p/s pump, you could hear the bearings in there grinding against each other. |

Sorry to be such a nerd, but that sounds a lot like a hard drive bearing that's about to fail. |

Thanks for the additional tips. Robbie, I know you said the noise went from in and out to continuous, was this while it was in neutral or in gear? thanks! |

sorry wes, honestly can't remember. i listened to the sound again, thinking maybe it was uj's, since under load and you think under the truck, but it just doesn't sound like that - too high pitched. |

My power steering has just started making noise. Can only really hear it when taking off, it is not yet loud enough to hear once driving. But while parked try turning the steering a bit, put's the pump under load and make's it easier to find. Well it did for me anyway. |

I believe I found the noise, I've isolated the noise and it seems to be coming from the water pump. |
