Can I rotate my own tires/wheels without having to wait in line at the local tire shop to get them balanced too? In other words, can I just jack it up and switch em?

And if you haven't seen the "sensorship disco III" thread in general discussions, it is really something to behold!

Do it yourself. Rotate the tires front to back; not in an X pattern. You don't need them balanced if you are not getting any vibration.

Thanks,

Ya thanks Thom... I MEAN, can I do it and not have vibrations... But seriously - how do you take the wheels off? Can I use a pry-bar on the lugs? How about when I go to take the tires off the wheels? Should I spray the entire wheel, front and back, with WD-40 first? Do you just rotate the tires, or do you take the wheels with them to make it easy on yourself? I'm just not sure I can get the tire on and off the wheel even with WD-40!!

I can't play any dumber than that.

Why not the X pattern? I want to balance wear across the tread, putting the back to front on the same side might help, but it would be more likely to wear in the same areas wouldn't it?

RB-

Get a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a socket to fit the lugs (17/16"), jack up the wheel, and get 'em off. I'd rotate the whole wheel and tire together for simplicity's sake.

I'm confused re: not rotating in an X pattern -- I've always done that with 4wd and 2wd cars and never had problems...

Aren't you guys doing too much work?

When I rotate, I just remove the tire with the breaker bar/socket combo, and then rotate the tire so it attaches on different lugs, and then tighten down.

Doesn't seem to matter if I rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise. This method has an added benefit of only having to jack up and remove one tire at a time, so if I get tired/bored I can finish the rotation the next day.

OK, I get it now, I need to take the tires off the wheels and turn them around, even if I don't like the white-walls out, I just have to deal with them for 3000 miles, then I can rotate back. That way I don't have to worry about pulling the stupid wheels AND tires off the actual truck - who wants to do that??

The only thing I am not sure of is do I deflate them first, or is it easier to just pop 'em off? Should I use a jack to get the truck off the ground, because I just don't see any other way around having to do that much work at least.

I think I will ask about rebuilding the engine in the kitchen after this...

Your all forgeting the most important thing!!!! You have to make sure you also rotate the air in the tires every 5K. You will see a huge improvement in the ride.

The easiest way to rotate the tires is to get on some wet pavement and put the throttle to the floor while makeing a turn from and stop. Tire should all rotate.

If the above does not get the desired results, you can always under inflate the tires and go rock crawling until the tires come of the rims, then rotate as you see fit.

Sorry but I just couldn't help my self on this post. :-)
