I went to buy an oil filter and found the Mobil1's(M1-301) for $12. On the box it says it replaces the fram PH8A and others. They only ahd Fram and Mobil1. I used fram on my Jeep and seemed to be ok and I have used them on others also. I will say the M1 was heavier than the fram. I guess that means better. Thoughts anyone. Thanks

Scott,
I use Fram oil filters on my Disco, my VW and on my motorcycle. I change the oil and filter on or about every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. Never had a problem although the Disco does drip oil from the filter, only a few drips a day.

Who uses Fram oil filters? people who shop at Wal-Mart.

Due to a cash crunch I went to get oil and filter for my other car at Wal-Mart. After I got home I decided to do a Goggle search on Fram oil filters as a curiosity. There were lots of postings on the internet warning not to use Fram oil filters. Can't remember what all the complaints were, but I think one of them was that the filter media breaks up and goes into the oil system.

I have a Fram oil filter on right now (since late August) and it too drips a couple drops a day. This never happened with genuine LR oil filters.

I too have seen the warnings but (1) I've never had problems with Fram filters on several different cars and (2) I've seen similar warnings about other brands.

Just read through an old (1995) Audi Quattro email listserv discussing some problems with Fram oil filters. Some sound like defective products, so here's the first link (FWIW) -- click on "thread next" at the top to go to the next message in the thread. I'd put 'em here but they're too long for the content! :-)

Now that I'm rolling on this :-), read this material as well -- a guy with too much time on his hands and some HTML skills did a Consumer Reports-style comparison of different oil filters:

http://minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html

His conclusions, which I found interesting, are at:

There. I'm done. No more from me on oil filters.

Andrew, thanks for the info. I am taking the fram back and going to find a Pure One PL30001. Most pleats and most filter area. Thanks again.

You got it Scott! As you can see above, I am a Fram user, until I change the oil again in about a month. Then it's something better and NO MORE FRAM!

FYI, there is an email supposedly from a Fram worker talking about their air filters too...might be worth looking into if Fram AF's are crap too.

Over the years I've used Fram, Purolator and Geniune LR. Either seemed to work fine. Mostly, I use the Genuine LR filters because I got a deal on them awhile back and have a bunch on the garage.

While I don't question the findings of the minimopar guy, keep in mind that the research on that site is over four years old. The quality might have changed in any of the filters mentioned.

Nick,
I use the longer filter. The Fram ph8a style that is made by AC. My Disco, a '98, came with the land rover version of that filter. The AC was the best rated filter available to me that I read about in a test a while ago. I do a lot of highway driving and change the oil every 5000. With three vehicles on the road it means I'm changing oil on at least one of them per month. They all last well over 100k without oil related problems, so I'm happy. :-)
