This my be a silly question, but I am trying to get everything organized in my trunk...recovery equipment, tools, axe, shovel, EMT bag, saw, folding chair, cooler, power tank, etc. I think I might go the plywood floor route so I can actually tie everything down.

What I really want is one of those Truck Vault drawer systems, but I'm not ready to spend a G on a drawer. And I don't want to go the classic EE pelican case route. I use these rugged rubbermaid cases, and they come in 2 sizes:

and

I am thinking to make a plywood floor with a shelf, a 2 level floor, so I can store tools and bags in between and still have an empty trunk.

Anyone have any ideas? Photos would be really great. Post them if you got them.

I think it makes more sense to put the "roof rack" inside the truck. All of the tools and heavy stuff would be attached to the floor and walls of the rear. Two metal bars would go across the width of the trunk, with a basket on top to net down all the light stuff.

The method I use right now is to simply throw everything in the back at the last minute, like I'm breaking out of jail.

When my kids go to college I'm taking the back seat out too.

Placing the fridge under a shelf is a stupid idea, if you have a fridge, place it where it is easy to get to.

We're not going to have this debate again, are we?

I like that trunk...then I would only have to tie down 1 thing.

As for tie downs, I just bought some of these...They are regular D rings but without that rubber around them.
http://www.stowaway2.com/accessories.asp

scroll down for the tie downs.

I am going to eventually make a plywood flooring.

Have you looked at this? Sorry the link is so long, but that is the way it came out of Cabelas's web site.

Joey,
I haven't seen that one before. It looks similar to the truck vault only $700 cheaper. I wonder how you strap it down.

There is no way you will catch me plasing a diamond plate box in my rear cargo area. Way too heavy for me.

And that Cabelas thing looks like a POS, plastic and 3/8" board. Not that great and you are going to have to tie it down somehow. Plus it looks just the wrong size.

I think may be right, but here's the other thing...Truck Vault drawers are 120lbs and this plastc one is 65lbs (I did some web searching) A lot of unnecessary weight back there.

Man, that trekoutfitters setup is sweet! I got all hot and bothered when I thought I read $350 for both the shelf and the dog guard. But alas, its $350 for each.

Yeah, but it might be worth the weight if mounted properly and if you can mount to it (like put your slide lock for the fridge on top and such. A diamond plate truck box is worthless to me, especially since rubbermaid and pelican are better alternatives (IMHO). Forget that cabelas thing though my tool box would crush it.

Have you seen these Tuffy cargo drawers...just like TruckVault but cheaper ($325) and better looking IMHO...

http://www.tuffyproducts.com/trunk/058.html

I just did some measuring and if I make the plywood floor and bold this to it, it would fit perfectly. Here's the general layout of it drawn in...

http://www.pbase.com/image/22731827

And here is the box in a Tahoe...

http://www.pbase.com/image/22731832

The only thing I don't like is that it is about 80lbs (found a site that says shipping weight is 81lbs) Is that too much weight? It seems it should be fine as this is their intended purpose. For comparison, those Engels are like 70lbs.

What do you think?

...And this would eleminate my tool box, and Rubbermaid action packers that bounce around everywhere, which could also be tied down on top of the tuffy box for when I go camping...

I've never used the Tuffy tool box, but have had various other Tuffy products in the past and have always found them to be first rate in quality and function.

Thanks for all the responses. I ordered the Tuffy cargo drawer. Looks like it should do fine. I am am concerned that it is heavy, espeially after hearing that Jamie's truck is sagging big time, but since AB shows it in the Disco, should be fine.

Chris, how heavy is that delta box for comparison?
