Can I get a rebuild kit, or do I need to buy the whole thing? Where should I shop? (1997 Disco)

Thanks

BJ

BJ where is it leaking from?
If you haven't check the hose pipe unions on top of the box suggest you do before spending $. I thought mine was leaking and found that a common problem was the nuts work loose and leak from the top of the box. Tightening them stopped my leaks.

Could also be a leaking PAS pump. The oil runs down a hose and drops right onto the steering box. Then the seals are dry and its hard to trace.

If the steering box has run many miles usually its better to buy a reconditioned one. Somehow done once and right that way. Often the s/boxes leak again after a fix though I once managed to cure the lower, big seal.

A "oil seal reconditioner" - oil additive in my opinion is a bad idea. It may help for a few miles but then the leak is worse than before - and the PAS pump seal will die, too. Thatīs what happened to me.

Have a look at:

Mine also leaks quite a bit.

I've tried to visually inspect and determine where the leak is coming from a few times, but nothihng obvious. I probably should spray with some engine cleaner and get it all cleaned up, then try again. It would be nice if it was loose nuts rather than having to replace the entire pump.

I replaced the lines some time ago, I looked at the box and it is leaking where the shaft goes in from the steering collumn.

My steering box does not leak but it does make the grunting/fart noise while turning at slow speeds usually in and out of parking spaces. My warranty co. would not replace the box since it had not completely failed. It has leaked, it grunts, LR has told me needs replacing, so I think it should be replaced. What exactly will happen when/if it fails? Are there any safety issues or will it become really hard to turn? Thanks
