Once upon a time, the Jeep CJ-5, Series Land Rover IIa, Toyota FJ-40, and the Nissan Patrol were your working 4x4s.... however, the Nissan Patrol probably only had a couple thousand imported into the US ever.... they're even more rare here than Series Land Rovers....

It seems like the drive train takes after a series truck. How close are these in comparison?

Well, it was a 4L 6-cyl with a 3-speed versus a Series being a 2.25L 4-cyl with a 4-speed...

But, they are in-line engines, RWD with selectable 4WD, the gearing in the diffs is over 4.0 (4.1 for the Patrol, 4.7 for the Series)...

FWIW.....

There is a guy on ih8mud that has a patrol. IIRC the only thing he mentioned being a problem on them is the diffs. Fortunately according to him, they are easily swapped out with FJ40 diffs.

Les, there were only about 800 of these patrols imported. They are really great trucks, even the newer ones (about FJ80-vintage).

Peter,

Once upon a time, I browsed through a little paperback, roughly called "a 4x4 field guide", which outlined all of the different 4x4 makers over the years, guidelines for perchasing, caveats, etc. If I remember correctly, it said around 2000 total, all years, for all of North America. I could be off on that, though, I'll have to see if I can put my finger on another copy of it and see what it really did say...

If we could get the current Patrols, that'd be better than going with the next Disco, IMHO, I hate to say... On the Toyota side, I like FJ40s and FJ60s, I could be happy in one, if I didn't have a Rover.... :-)

The current Patrols are just like current FJ100s -IFS'd and oversized.
On the Toyota side, you'd love FJ75 - but they never made it state-side officially. Still in production.

Both trucks sold as a pair for 300.00. What a deal (I think).
