So what is your take on this....I am getting a low frequency vibration in the 60 to 70 range. I have gotten the tires balanced three times and the tires only have about 4k on them. I feel the vibe in the seat, not the wheel. Sometimes it feels as though it changes frequency depending on throttle position. Unfortunately, I got the tires and the front shaft replaced within like 2 days of each other, so i right now I am thinking maybe i got an out of balance front shaft. Is that possible? The rear U joints seem fine (no movement when I push on the shaft and try to move it around) and the rear rubber coupling looks fine. What is up with this?

Matt

When you accelerate or decellerate, that changes the pinion angles. Non-stock pinion angles are one of the main things that can cause a propshaft to vibrate.

An out of balance, or out of phase, propshaft will certainly create a bad vibe, especially if combined with odd pinion angles.

You said that you just got the propshaft "replaced"...why did you do that? And is your truck lifted?

You can remove one propshaft to determine whether it is the front or rear driveline which vibrates.

The truck (D2) is not lifted. I got the front shaft replaced because it felt like it was going bad and the dealer replaced it under warranty. The truck now has 54K on it. She had the original michelins on her when I bought it but they were cupped pretty bad and thus virbrated. I still got about 15K out of them before I couldnt stand it anymore. I got them replaced with some General Grabbers thay are the same tire that comes on the Benz M class. They ride a lot smoother but I would not try much more than mild off roading with them. Anyhow, I got them because they were on special for $70 a tire in the stock size so I figured if I ever lift it then I would be more willing to part with them before they are worn than I would the Michelins that were twice the price. Anyhow, that is a long way of saying that since the tires were cheap I would not be shocked if one of them was a little off roundness. But, they are street tires, so they should ride smooth. I am taking the truck in tomorrow morning to get a seat motor replaced and wonder if I should mention it to them or if I should just keep working with it. I figured since I feel the vibe in the seat it would be a back tire, so I could first try rotating them, and if I feel it in the steering then it is obviously one of the back tires. If there is no difference, it must be driveline. I guess that would be easier than removing the front or rear shaft. Sound ok?

You may want to have them test drive it at high speed to see if the mechanic feels that it is a tire, or a driveline vibration. Rotating the wheels could also tell you if it is one of the tires which is causing the problem.

But if you think that the vibration changes by getting on, or letting off the gas pedal, then it is driveline related. I think the LR front driveshafts are extremely well balanced, so it is unlikely to be the source of the vibe. But these trucks have unusually big angles at the pinions, so it doesn't take much to cause the propshaft to amplify any vibration.

Also I don't know if your truck is drivable with only one propshaft. I thought you had a Disco1; now I realize it is a 2001DII.

Another source of vibrations is worn suspension bushings, or loose bolt. You may be suprised how a little slack somewhere in the suspension/steering can create vibes/shakes.

Good luck
Randall
