I just returned from a 500 mile road trip. I've got tcase fluid on my rear door and window. It ran underneath, mostly on the passenger side, got all over the rear diff and frame. Anyway, it seems to be orginating from the top of the tcase, but I'm not sure. I'm going to clean it up and add some fluid so I can investigate.

Any ideas on the "most likely" leak point?

Me too...just keep filling it up...it appears worse than it is...and Lucas Oil Stabilizer added to the fluid will slow or even stop these leaks sometimes.

Try to clean it up as much as possible. Then check the input seal from the transmission and the output seals to your shafts. Another possibility is the seal on the bottom plate might be deteriorated.

All of my seals were replaced when my front driveshaft failed, but then the darn thing leaked even worse afterwards.

Hey Guys,
If it's a red color fluid, it's not coming from the T-case. The DII uses 90wieght gear oil in the t-case to help keep the noise down. I had a similar problem after a long trip mine, it was puking ATF out the Transmission breather tube. It doesn't take much to think it's a major leak. It could have been overfilled or just got hot...to be safe, have the level checked

I knew that :-)

I have a wonderful sampling of 90 weight oil spots on my driveway. The Pig is getting an engine now and the T-case is also on the adgenda.

Paul,

Not to derail from this thread, but what happened to your engine? If I remember correctly, you had the front axle replaced (along with some other work) done under warranty not long ago?

Eugene,

Yep, lately it's been fun times with the Pig. They didn't replace the axle, just the front driveshaft and the t-case seals. Then the t-case started to gift me with 90W spots on the drive.

My engine started to enjoy the consumption of oil at the rate of 4 quarts per 2500 miles. That figure is an overall average taken from 5 months of oil consumption analysis. There was one trip where the Pig consumed 1 quart in 400 miles. For the record, I was very anal with oil changes; every 3750 miles with Mobil 1 10-30 and a LR Genuine filter.

Who knows what will happen next.

I had a situation when I moved from Philly to Florida recently where my T-Case was blowing off fluid. I had been driving for about 20 hours straight, other than bathroom, food and gas stops, and the t-case coated my trailer, back door and rear window. The bottom was covered too. Best guess I could come up with was that the T-Case had been over filled at the factory and the fluid had become super heated and expanded out of the breather hole.

I checked the fluid on the side of the road and it over flowed from the t-case. I recently changed the fluid about 2 weeks ago and all was normal.

Maybe the same thing happened with your t-case. Too much fluid inside, then adding heat, means the fluid has to expand somewhere.

I'm preparing for another cross country trip, went to dealer to get the seeping washer jet and fuel filler fixes, and ended up with a new MAF sensor, and front diff too!

All covered under warranty. Extended warranty will be my next purchase.

42,000 miles w/ no oil or drivetrain leaks and very little oil consumption. Chesapeak Bay to Moab over the summer, so hopefully I'm just working out the kinks before she settles in for the next trouble free 100,000 miles:-)

Thanks for the responses guys - I'll keep tabs on the situation. My main concern of course was an empty tcase resulting in expensive repairs or replacement.

Funny thing, I went to top it off lastnight and it didn't take much at all before it started dripping back out of the refill plug.

On a side note - my rig was chewing up oil in a big way with no leaks or noticeable burning - at around 20k miles, LR replaced the engine!Something serious was wrong, but I never found out what it was.

Charles,

I'll let that one slide since you did crawl under my truck to look at the slick!

I've got about 16 months left 'til it's paid off. I've got to hold on...or my wife will make me trade it in.
