I just installed a Rovertym 2 inch lift yesterday on my 98 disco. And now I am having front drive shaft vibrations when I am speeding up and slowing down. This happens at speeds from 15 to 25 miles per hour. Then stops if your are going slower or faster. I thought maybe the caster was off. But I had it checked today and everything is within normal specs. Any ideas? Regards nutter |

My front driveshaft did the same thing too (I have 3" suspension lift from RTE.) The stock driveshaft needs to be replaced. I bought a double-cardon driveshaft from Great Basin Rovers. I now have no vibes, and a really cool looking green driveshaft! The final total price was $413. Thanks, Matt |

Hi, I would suggest that you maybe control your U-Joints and eventually replace them, because, maybe a $413 price is too much for you (as it is for me.... ). Krys |

I vote for front drive shaft U-Joints. Caused by the change in angle between diff. shaft centerline and transfercase output shaft centerline, when you lifted your rig. Are Disco's more sensitive to this, 'cuz I have a '90RR with a 3" OME lift and no vibes. (Knock on wood) |

Is this the same Nutter of the famed "Nutter Bypass" on the Jeep BBS? |

UPDATE I had a set of 265/75/16 BuckShot Mudders put on 3 days ago and by changing the tires (size of) seems to have corrected most of the drive shaft vides. I am only getting a a very slight vide around 15 to 18 miles per hour now (both speeding up and slowing down). All other vides are gone. Today my drive shaft came in and I installed it. This has now fully corrected all vide issues. Hope this helps. Cheers Nutter |

The rear driveshaft is at less of an angle so it isn't affected as much as the front. The length of the front is a lot shorter so when you lift the rig the angle gets steeper. |

You don't want to cheap out on a front driveshaft or ujoints, because if it lets go while at speed, you are looking at some serious carnage from that free spinning shaft. Usually it takes out the transmission, and whatever else it happens to hit in the vicinity. As far as double cardan front driveshaft replacements go, the Great Basin shaft is a good choice, allthough it's not cheap. The GB shaft uses spicer ujoints, which are slightly bigger than the stock joints. You can also pick up Spicer replacement joints at any Auto Part store when it is time for a replacement. - Axel

The replacement shaft that I got was the one from Great Basin Rovers. I've seen some rock crawling competitions were the driveshaft broke and did some serious damage. I would hate to see one of those heavy things flying around under a disco. I mentioned at the top of this page that the final price for mine in the end was $413, that could be different now though. Axel is right, this is something that nobody should cheap out on. Good luck, Matt |
