I just purchased a 1996 D1 with a 5 speed. Changed all the fluids (the carmel out of the swivels was particularly interesting), and believe it or not there is only one oil leak. But it's a doozy.

The CDL rear output shaft seal is evidently way gone. The CDL fluid is seeking a quiescent level roughly at the level of the lower part of the rear output seal.

Question: I'm guessing that operation of the CDL at this low level of oil is probably OK - because it's been operated like this for a long time (the underneath WAS dry and dusty). Before I head off more than 50 miles from home, I want someone to tell me 'no big deal'.
It drives OK - shifts in and out of hi/lo OK - shifts in and out of dif lock OK.
What's the story?
Thanks!

Sounds like you're talking about your transfer case, of which the center differential lock is a component.

I would not consider it "no big deal" until you check the transfer case fluid level.

Despite the fact that Rovers leak often, I'm not comfortable with leaks, and just had my 2001 D2 sealed up, so my transfer case is nice and dry again.

the actual case flogs out around the seal I am told by a rover specialist in OZ. Continuing to replace the seal on high mileage units is useless and a steel insert is required - because the casting is allow and it flogs out

A steel insert? Yikes. Hope not - won't know until I take it apart to look. And really I was just hoping to find out if I can limp along with a leaky t-case.

That'll be cheap - and plus it can be done with the t-case still in the truck, huh? So we're potentially looking at labor to remove the t-case, machine the seal surface, press in a steel insert, press in the seal and re-install. That's a lot of 75W90 leaked onto my floor before I could justify that. Of course, a t-case reduced to rubble would change my mind a lot faster.
Thanks for the input.
