I found a tear on one of the engine belts that hook up to the air compressor. the tear is on the lower softer part of the belt. I was planning on taking rover out of town on sunday and was wondering if the belt should be fixed immediatly or if it can still be driven with the tear. It is an 88 RR. Any info on how strong Rover belts are would be great!

actually without looking right at my rover I don't think you need it unless you want AC if that is what you mean by air compressor. So I am pretty sure you could let it go or just cut it off and be fine. Just don't plan on having AC.

If you don't need AC, cut it. You won't hurt anything.

Your right I really don't need AC right now, so I guess I will either cut it or leave it on until I have the time to replace it. Thank-you for the quick info and advice!

I have an 89 that had horrible tears in it for over a year and they never broke. Some of the belts were losing their thickness as they were coming apart in sheets. They are extremely strong.

I believe that that belt won't actually turn unless you have the air on. There is a clutch on that part that won't engage unless you turn it on or sometimes it can come on with the defrost.

Belt turns but AC clutch does not engage unless AC/defrost turned on.

Don't worry about it until you can put on a new belt. OEM Danish-made belts are good quality-I use either Continental or Gates Green Stripe belts due to availability. Changing the outer two belts (Water pump and AC) and Alt belt takes only a few minutes if you know what you're doing. PS pump belt can be more of a pain.

My 2 cents-

Thanks for all the advice and info. I think I'll just leave the belt alone until next weekend when I have the time to fix it. It sounds like rover belts are pretty strong, which is a good thing, a very very good thing. Thanks again!

Let me tell you this - it is very simple to fix a suspect belt for about 10 bucks...take the 10 f'n minutes and change it NOW before you suffer on the road. I have learned some very hard, nasty lessons in the "oh it'll hold for a while" category with mt 88. Nothing beats a small amount of preventive care. Do yourself a favor, rest easy on the road and do it now

Sean has a point-

None of us know how bad your belt is except you. If it breaks while driving it could become lodged under and wrap around other drive belts or fan and be a big problem.

I've replaced the outer two belts (you have to take the water pump belt off to get to the AC belt so might as well replace it too and both belts are same size) in the parking lot of the parts store in about 15 minutes.

The AC and water pump belts I'm using are a Gates Green Strip XL #9390. I think that's a 13x1000 size and costs about $8.00 ea.

So what happens if the belt breaks while driving and hits the plastic fan?????

Cut it or change it NOW...

Well, after reading the two posts saturday night, I thought twice about leaving the belt on. I did't have time to post another message, but I did go out and cut the belt off the AC compressor. The Rover ran fine without the belt. I'll probably replace the belt on friday. A big thanks to everyone who posted!
