i have a 95 d1 with a 5spd, my question is why do my tires spin, in the rain or dry my front tires always spin it dosnt even seem like AWD. when i lock the cdl all four tires pull but without the cdl locked it almost seems like just front wheel drive, is there something wrong or is this just because of weight distrubution

It seems like discoverys favor the front, but it does not sound like anything is wrong.

Im lucky if my wheels will spin in snow.

When you accelerate, all the weight transfers to the back wheels holding them down and the fronts lighten and spin!!

Mike - does your steering feel very light? Or are you carrying a bunch of stuff in the back, past the back wheels?

Move some weight onto the front (could potentially be a good excuse for a HD bumper / winch if you word it carefully to the misses)

This is very simple. On the D1, the center diff is open unless locked, thus the axle with the least resistance gets the giddy up. So, as Stephen said, when you accelerate weight transfers to the back creating less resistance up front. When you lock it you get a 50/50 split.
