These questions are directed mainly to LR salesguides & technicians. I did a quick search of the archives for the Michelin XPCs. The comments were 51/49 split on the + side. The question then, is why did LR go to GYs? Was it mainly a cost issue? Or was there something wrong with the Michelins? I also noticed that the 03 DII S model has 16" wheels while the SE & HSE models use the 18" wheels. Outside of "looks" and assuming the "upgrade" models are heavier, is it b/c the 18"s handle better on-road? TIA |

The XPC was discontinued by Michelin, Michelin tires cost more than Goodyears Pirelli etc and BMW wanted to save big buck or pounds by moving away from the exclusive Michelin to save money |

The reasoning behind the 16" to 18" wheel upgrade is purely aesthetic. The 18" wheels would be more suceptible to damage off-road, and it's more likely a base model would venture off-road than a top model.

The XPC is still listed on Michelin's web site. They are around $50 more per tire than that piece of crap Goodyear HP. If you are looking for a nice upgrade to the GY, I really like the XPC. It's not a true "wheelin" tire by any means, but better on-road manners than the GY, and so superior off road you can't compare the two. I've got 16". Noticed at the dealer the new RR comes with the GY in 19", but I think the XPC was stock in previous years on 18" rims. I bought mine from a local tire store, but tirerack stocks them in 16" and 18" http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=4x4+XPC&vehi cleSearch=true&partnum=565HR64X4XPC&fromCompare1=yes |

I got close to 80k miles out of my XPC's (97 D1). I've already got 20k on the second set. Best tires I've ever owned. |

Jaime - glad to hear that. I struggled with the cost, but have been pleased w/ past Michelin's. So far, one trip to Moab and about 3000 miles and the XPC's are great. I considered the new Michelin Cross Terrain SUV, but it appears too "on road" for what I wanted. I drove the Michelin 4x4 Synchrone on a Freelander and it sucked in snow, which is important to me.
