I am having alot of misfires and hesitations while driving. Can the O2 sensors cause rough driving? I hear arching sounds by the ignition coils. How can you tell if the ignition coils are bad? I know I probably should change out my sensors. 97 Disco 150k I am pretty certain it is not the valves. AutoZone lost their obdII reader.

charles-the OBD II codes would be helpful as they can reveal specific cylinder misfires vs O2 sensor, MAS codes etc. they also sell the readers for about $150. see what their return policy is. not sure how to trouble shoot ignition coils. good luck.
cheers,
carl

O2 sensors wouldn't cause arcing by the coils, when is the last time you changed your wires?

O2 sensors send signals to the ECU which is then used to control the fuel/air ratio (along with the signal that comes from the MAF) If you are running way too rich or lean, it could possibly cause some misfires I suppose, and at 150k you are probably due for new O2 sensors anyway, but I would take a look at your plugs, wires and speed sensor first. It could of course be a bad coil or two, also. Check for vacuum leaks, too.

I hear arching by the coils still. Today my truck is driving fine go figure. Wires are changed every 36k. I am going to go by another autozone to get the codes read. I know I need a few O2 sensors at 150k. I was just wondering, if they are out will this give me sputtering around 50 mph. Now I have got vibes 50-70mph. Im going to do an archive search. Will post codes when I get them read.

Thanks All

Coil's and ignition in general seem to be a problem on early disco's.

While I've had few problems overall (other than drip, drip, drip), the problems I've had have been electrical.

Replace coil (twice)
Replace Ignition module
Arcing on wire going from coil to distributor against airbox
replace plub wires.

Charles Harbor Frieght sells an OBDII reader for about $50. My CE light came on the other day and the dealer wanted $80 to read the codes. I had a 1316 Misfire Excessive Emissions. The reader cleared the code and the light went out. I then noticed an exhaust leak where the y pipe conects to the exhaust manifold. Droped the y pipe put in new gaskets and no more problems. I think a well spent $50.

Update. Replaced 1 o2 sensor, wires and plugs. Runs like a champ. Everything is gone. It is like I have a brand new truck.
