OK, so the for sale ad got me thinking. What would be involved in mounting a front seat in the rear seat area? I've removed my rear seats and the idea of a bucket seat back there is intriguing...anyone have suggestions or input?

Andy,

Sounds like a "backseat driver" problem to me. :-)

I hate having the back seats in. I never drive with more than one person (besides myself) in the car, and it's nice for hauling things. For a while I had the "40" side of the 60/40 rear seat in, but I want to have something a little more, well, aesthetically pleasing :-)

Maybe I'll have to try to come up with something on my own...but it'd be nice to have a starting point and some directions :-)

Andy,
I had thought about something like that as a long term project but my idea was to take Corbeau GTS II's and put four in-cost becomes an issue here pretty quick though. Not to mention clearance and such, the benefit of the aftermarket seats is the bracket choices you would have (which I guess you could have if you fab'd brackets for O.E. front seats too) not to mention comfort, and if you were going hardcore and installed a roll cage you would then have four seats with the capability of going 5-point restraining on.

Some other benefits I could see would be making a second console between the rear seats for one of those fridge consoles, and I think it would divide up the vehicle well if you were taking more than two people on a really long road trip/expedition.

If you go that route post pics and feedback, I'd like to see how it works out.

Sounds like the ideal set up. So much more aesthetically pleasing there in the back. And I do agree with Ray, the rear center console with the fridge or such would definately add a lot. Best of luck, keep us updated.

Now I see what you are saying Andrew...and I am intrigued. If you do it make sure you get heated bucket seats. That way you can add 2 more buttons to the car. And maybe you could also make them powered seats...Love to see pics when you are finished.

LOL Jamil...no power, no heat...if it were up to me my front seats would be manually-powered.

The longer I have my D1 the more convinced I am that I should've bought a restored Series truck instead. :-)

haha I've seen people freak out when they see the digital display on my thermostat on the Disco II. Let alone features like hill descent control.

Andrew...I have 2 Disco II third row jump seats you could install in the 2nd row...

But will they install facing inward?

:-)

I guess my gripe is with the way the bench seats get out of the way -- because they don't really get out of the way. Like I said, maybe it's a little out of whack, but I'd like to have either inward-facing seats or rear seats that truly fold down and out of the way back there. Nothing like a Honda Odyssey, mind you...which is what makes me think what I really want is a 109 2-door or 88".

:-)

Andy,
It would seem you're on the high road the 109 two door, 110 truck cab, or what have you. :-)

For me this is an idea whose time will come in the future, my wife isn't too keen on it right now-mainly b/c I don't think she wants me ripping out the O.E. seats to bolt something down which we would then strap our car seat into. (I keep telling her that if we did the rollcage thing the carseat would be much better secured)

To take it a step further I was considering doing a military style quick takedown setup where you use pins to hold the seat in place much the same way you can on aircraft. Four pins per seat would probably work and once pulled you'd be left with a cargo area that was only marred by the brackets. Just a concept, and one from a guy who doesn't work on the birds so perhaps someone like Paul Morgan should chime in here and say if that is "safe" or not.

Many Drag Racers use pins to make their seat come out quickly for more room for maintanance between rounds. I would guess that they are pretty securely mounted. Maybe copy one of them.
I like the idea. The rear 'fold and tumble' seats still use up a boat load of room....

This is something that's gonna take some time and thought, well more time than thought.

Finances (and girlfriend) dictate against replacing my perfectly good OEM rear bench with (as she put it) "fancy-schmancy racing seats." As much as I love the idea, there are about 15 projects in the house and in the truck that come before rear buckets...but you guys will be the first to hear about it if/when it happens!

Or maybe I'll just get that 2-door 109"

:-)
