The cold weather has hit, and as expected with all that M^3 of space and glass area the heater has to be going full-out to keep it toasty. After taking the kids trick-or-treating in -10c last night I noticed that the fan just stops intermittantly, and goes on again when I touch the fan control. I was thinking that perhaps it's on a thermostat, but I dont think so. Is this one of these "electrical gremlins" that I was warned about? Also I notice that the Disco also runs quite cool at highway speeds, are they ok with a hotter thermostat? We only have -10 so far but there is far colder weather than that not to far off... TIA |

The fan shutting down in normal...if you run the fan for too long on full blast, it will trip a relay (over heating the fan sensor) At least this is kind of the explination I got from my local LR Mechanic. He said if you have to run the fan for a long time, use level 3 if it is just short term, the 4 is ok... |

Actually 94-95's have crappy fan switches. You should be able to run the fan all day long at 4 and have no problems. The slide switch will go bad over time. You can clean the contacts with an electrical cleaner by spraying it in, that could help. Other idea is find one in a junk yard, problem is most salvage places will want to sell you the whole heating control assembly. Being a cheap bastard I pulled mine apart, sanded the contacts with 220 grit and sprayed it down with contact cleaner. Worked ever since that overhaul without issues. The cut out problem seems to happen to everyone in the '4' setting, using ac or heat. Yes this is one of those lucas famous gremlins, but its easy to get rid of. As for the temps, changing to a new LR thermostat and getting the radiator power flushed is a good idea. The early discovery radiators last to about 100k miles if they haven't been regularly flushed. The aluminum in the radiator corrodes and plugs them up. My 95's radiator died at about 105k, I too lacked heat, but in the summer it would have okay, but boil over at the reservor tank started happening. The issue was the clogged radiator. I would first power flush the radiator. Find a mechanic that has that machine and replace the t-stat at the same time. If you still have issues check the radiator out. LR made 2 tempeture range t-stats, I run the lower temp one as I play in the southern utah deserts in summer and it would be odd for SLC to hit -10c. If need be get the radiator cored or replace it all together. |

"if you run the fan for too long on full blast, it will trip a relay (over heating the fan sensor)" Hmmmmmmm, I have never heard of a fan switch heat sensor. |

I had to replace the heater control assembly on my '96. My fan would only work on 4, and you would have to jiggle the fan switch to get that to happen. Not much fun to replace, but no problems since then. |

Seems its just the fan control were on about here, Some time,s I have to jiggle the controler too. Just the other day the dam thing would not work when I was trying to get some cold air out of the Air con. Managed to get it to work Noel |
