Help,
My rear door lock will NOT stay unlocked. I thought the Power Lock actuator was weak so I replaced it. Same behavior. IT will lock just fine, but when unlocking it doesnt have enough power to keep the lock up "unlocked". It does push the lock up but it then just falls back down. On inspection of the mechanism there is a Y shaped arm that goes from the actuator toward the door lock. The upper part of the Y "the y sits horrizontally with the Y portion to the right as your looking at it". The upper portion of the Y goes to the door lock knob that you would pull or push on to lock the door from inside. The lower part is connected to nothing but has a hole in it. I'm thinking that either a spring needs to be there or a weight. In the HAYNES manual it appears there is a weight attached there. Can SOMEONE confirm this for me? And if so does anyone have a parts Disco with that Y arm intact that can send it to me.
Thanks
Todd

Todd,
Same thing happened to my truck (lock will not stay in the upright position). You can only open the door if you hold the lock fully up. After taking the the panel off, I thought that it was a spring that broke as well but thought that it was odd that I did'nt find any parts laying around in the bottom of the door. Upon closer inspection of the latch mechanism I found a broken wire/spring looking thing about half an inch long that was broken. It's not a standard type spring but one that is bent in a funny shape. I called the dealer and they said that they don't fix these things but will put a new one in for $148 plus labor. In short, I ordered a new latch mechanism from RN for $124.xx. Just waiting for it to arrive. I also did what you did and swapped out the actuator from the rear passenger door just to be sure. If you really need too, you can rig a spring on the Y and hook it so that it holds the lock up. This will let you open the door from the inside and outside but you won't be able to lock the door. When the new part arrives I'll post a pic if you still need it.

Good luck,
Mark

Is it a round shaped spring? IE, i rotates in a circular fasion and is connected to two sepearte arms close to their pivit/hinge point to resist them moving. I went to the dealer today and verified that the NEW lock actuators dont have much resistance either. I also looked at a new lock mechanism. Complicated unit but I saw the spring I descrive above and thought it could be suspect.
Thanks
Todd

Yes thats the one. Mine was so badly mangled and I managed to break it while pulling it off with plyers. My dealer did'nt have one on hand so I did'nt get to look at it to see if I could fashion somthing similair. It's looks easier to replace the whole latch mechanism rather than trying to replicate that spring. Now I just need to wait for snail mail to deliver so I can put my door panel back on.
Oh the joys of owning a rover. Here are some other things that went all in the same week.
left manifold cracked (welded back together), cargo door latch (waiting on part), rear main seal leaking (not bad enough to justify pulling everything apart right now) Guess I'll be leaving a drip pan on the drive way for the time being -Mark

Mark,
I fixed it. I found a good selection of springs at the hardware store but NOTHING was even close to what was in there. But I found a spring the same diameter with about the same thickness of wire but it had about 20 coils instead of 1.5 coils. So I cut it and bent the ends with a couple needle nose pliers to match the rough shape of what it looked the old spring was. It Worked. Yay. I'll post some pics of the old spring and the new fabricated spring when I get a chance. It will be my first contribution to the "TECH" section. Anyhow, thans for the help. I'm glad I tried to fabricate the spring, only cost me .40cents and a couple hourse work to pull the lock and replace it. We'll see how long it lasts but for now I'm happy.
