Hello, I was wondeirng if someone has some insight in some problems I recently have in my Disco '96. I tried to get it smogged a few days ago, and passed everything execpt the functional test because of the check engine came back on again.

So i plugged into the OBD2 socket and took its reading. It seems like the code was P0158 (Oxygen Sensor High Voltage B2S2), so I took out the rear-right sensor. When I shook the sensor it made some ratteling noise inside the o2 sensor. So my first question is - is that normal or is it busted?

The other thing is that I get a second code from OBD2, which is P1318 (according to some website it says "ABS Rough Road Line High Fault"), and on the smog paper, it list only one code and says my car failed because of P1318. So the second question is that is P1318 related to the ABS or something else? It kind of retarded to fail the emission test if the error has nothing to do with the emission in the first place! And if it is the ABS, what should I do to resolve this problem? Thanks in advance. -Ram

ram,
unless the litte washer is the source of your rattle the sensor should not make a noise when you shake it. P0158 is short to earth on your rear sensor (bank 2 sens2). check the wires for wear. you can attempt repair or replace the sensor. P1318 is (i think) a cylinder misfire code, and is likely secondary to your O2 sensor issue. try replacing the sensor and see what happens. if you can clear the code you should then be fine.

or you could clear the code and take it right away to the dealer. the code won't likely come back on right away. good luck,
carl

The rattling is definitly coming from inside of the cylindrical head. Thanks for the info. About resetting the odb2 right before the test, I dont know how true it is but I was talking to the emission dude, and he tells me that once you reset the codes, there is a time period where it is reinitilizing it checks for like 30 miles or something and if you resmog it within the 30 miles you will fail automatically. hrm.

Thanks carl,

ram,
hopefully then a new O2 sensor will solve your problem. just drive for more than 30 miles after resetting the light.
cheers,
carl

The O2 code (P0158) has now gone away, but the P1318 (maybe it was P1317) code still shows. Anyone have any pointers to whats wrong? I am running on the highest octane fuel, ~160K on the engine, and it seems that I have passed all the emission test except the functional siince the stupid light kept coming on. Thanks in advance.
