For the second time in about a month my ATF temp light came on. I had only been driving a few miles. Before the light came on I noticed a loud metal on metal grinding type sound. After driving a few miles the noise suddenly went away and about a minute later the ATF temp light went out. The noise sounds like it is coming from the front of the truck. The noise isn't affected by applying the brakes. I'm thinking it's the front driveshaft. However, I have never heard of this affecting the transmission temp. I only have about 1.5 inches of lift. The driveshafts have never been replaced. I have about 80k on the truck. Any Ideas? |

Most of the time that light comes on, it is because of the temp sensor wiring, and not actually a problem with high temps. The sensor is located on the trans fluid pipe close to the radiator. You can drain the trans fluid to check for overheating. The fluid will have turned dark color if it overheats. If you use sysnthetic trans fluid the transmission will run about 20F cooler then with regular trans fluid. |

But don't forget that using Syn fluid on an older trans promotes more leaks. |

Anybody using synth ATF? Which one? I need to change my ATF and I'm thinking synth, especially if it helps to keep the transmission running cooler. SC |

Mobil Synthetic ATF Dexron III. That's what we use in all of the trucks here. |
