Hello All,

I'm wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what kind of money you might be looking at to have a clutch replaced in a 97 D1? I'm located in Canada, but opinions from anybody appreciated!

I'm also curious as to your opinion whether this is a repair which should be done by the dealer, or whether a good independent mechanic can complete it. Are online parts sources significantly cheaper than dealers costs on this one.

My machine is in having (surprise surprise) a number of seals replaced. The dealer called me up a short while ago and indicated that the clutch and transmission are out as part of the initial work and the clutch appears better than 50% worn. He indicated that it might be smart to replace it while everything is already out. He suggested cost would be about $750 CDN (~$575 USD). I indicated I would think about it and call him back in the morning.

Any insights are greatly appreciated.

Depending on condition I would be tempted to just put a new disc and throwout bearing in there as well as a new spigot bush rather than the whole shebang.

Borg and Beck clutch kits are dirt cheap in the UK if you can wait a few days. 100UKP or so.

I sort of agree with Ron, but I'd put all new bits in while you are there. A friend of mine is an ex-army mechanic, and if a new Land-Rover was going somewhere critical, they'd change the Valero clutch for a Borg & Beck unit as a matter of course. Most of the cost of the job will be getting the thing apart and back together.
