I have a few newbie questions for my LR and general off-roading. I was going down a super steep hill with some major ditches. I think the maximum left/right roll-over is around 45 degree (I wasn’t too worried about this) but do I really need to worry about front / back roll-over?

Several people were concerned my LR might flip back-over-front when the front end went into one of the holes. I was going down really slow (less than a few mph) and tried to keep a straight line so my rear did not get out of line. The fear was when the front end dropped into the hole, the back-end would of course pop up some, and hence the back-over-front roll over worry. I personally wasn’t too worried about this but I thought it was worth a post.

Thank you for any thoughts.

Regards...Clay

PS Some additional trail info, it was a tight trail so I couldn’t use a switchback route and the trail had a gravel sort of surface which made braking / slow speed more difficult.

Not sure Clay, but remember that a lot of the weight is up front, which makes it pretty damn difficult to flip back-over-front at about any angle.

I'd be more concerned going uphill, but not as concerned as the sideways slide/rollover combination...

Andy, a Discovery has nearly 60% of its weight on the rear axle, which is why it is less likely to flip back-over-front. For the same reason, it is more likely to flip backwards doing a hillclimb.

however, I believe in either case the angle is over 45 degrees.

Damn Rob!

That is pretty much insane in my book. Is that you?

It was pretty obvious that the approach angle was not going to be enough to pull you out of that hill. Just an ounce of gas at the wrong time would have sent that Disco over, especially since the nose was planted in the dirt. Probably speaks a mile for some driving skill there.

How far did the rig fall before the face plant?

Pretty impressive, nontheless. Not too much carnage either. If I would have tried that I would be on the roof for sure.

I just got home from work and realized I put the wrong words there. Of course it should be "in the rear" not "up front."

Rob, too funny.. when I saw this thread, I was planning to paste the (thats a cliff) link. Seems we persevered back at the camp munching on
that NEWKIRK Brisket.

Well crap! Sorry. Sorry to who ever was in the accident and glad everyone is OK. I guess I should eat my words about that skill part.

All I can say is... I learned to walk the trail the hard way too. But not quite that hard. Usually I tend to look before I leap these days.

An accident!? Really? Nevermind...

Oh, and about that brisket. You know I like some good brisket myself. But the picture on the EE home page makes it look like something from Fear Factor. ;-)

Cheers,

Brian

"i understand some damage occurred to the motor/trans mounts from the abrupt stop."

Yes, all four engine and tcase mounts sheared and the whole drive-train moved forward (downward?) about 2 inches. Hopefully, it's all better now, Mike?

"We did eat a fearful amount of food!"

Ha-ha, speak for yourself Aaron. Superb eggplant BTW, but what the hell do you have against egg beaters?? :-)

Steve, thanks for the use of the generator last weekend. I learned much following you. Very graceful in all situations.
TRULY Aaron, how do you feel about Eggbeaters?
Don't hold back...(was that a long conversation?)

OK - so let me get this straight:

**Traveltoad = Aaron

**Aaron is not liking Eggbeaters

**Brisket keeps people safe at camp

OK - now that we have that down I feel better. Ed, do you want to tell how you got to sleep Saturday night at ICS? I think you were counting how many times a word was said by Aaron and you got to 467?

I slept well counting the Furbys digging under the Gold Rover's bonnet. This little bastard has too much to say and too much to time. http://www.expeditionexchange.com/ics2/furby.jpg

Yes, the brisket ruled! Best I ever had.

As for the accident, now that there are tiretracks going over that edge, I suppose it might be repeated..... :-)

Yes, there were an ICS2, and Rob was there. I know, because I saw him there, and he rode back across to PA with me...
