For those of you who have a Magellan GPS, get the new MapSend DirectRoute software, it takes the MapSend streets, updates them, adds a lot more backcounrty roads, gives them a more realistic shape, and allows you to create interactive automatic driving directions in as little as 30 seconds to any point in your database or map - makes the GPS 100% more useful! Anyway, I just got MapSend TOPO and tried to install it. It gave me an error message about 63% of the way through doing the FULL installation. I tried again and it gave me the same message that it could not read the source disk. I then tried the minimum install and it seemed to work untill I tried to run the program and it gave me the same type of message. I then uninstalled it, deleted the left over files and tired to install it one more time. This time it only gave me the option of Reinstalling, which it then tries to uninstall the program that isn't there and it simply goes in circles. I noticed that the program is still listed in the Install/Remove window in Settings. I have the feeling there is a record of the original program still on the computer telling it that it needs to be uninstalled before it can be reinstalled. Can anyone tell me how to clear the Install/Remove window of programs that are not on the computer anymore? And just so you know, Magellan is sending out a new disk to me since the on I have does seem to have an error on it. |

I've got a similar problem with Garmin software. I have some kind of conflict occuring between the 2 mapping programs. I've had the MapSource TOPO software installed for some time. When I got my Street Pilot, I installed the MapSource City Navigator software. I called Garmin a few months ago to see if they could be "merged" to access either of them when making a map. They told me how and I followed their instructions. Since that time, my City Navigator thinks it cannot find street names or addresses - even when I make sure that it is not trying to access TOPO on "find" requests. I did the uninstall/install thing too - didn't work for me. I should probably give it another try by uninstalling programs and downloading updates. Perhaps they've got some kind of patch by now. This has been such a pia, that I just use the units themselves and avoid the software. I'd luv to fix it and then be able to just carry my map data chip back and forth. Sure would be easier. Hope you post when you get it figured out - I'm very interested. Thanks, Jamie |

The first unistall on either program may not have been as complete as the company thinks it is. There may be files or registry entries that are still present on your computers. About the only thing to do in that case is to call the respective company and talk to tech support. It is very possible that their 1st level Tech Support will not be able to help you and it will need to be escalated to a higher level. They may not even yet know about the problem. Tech support (once they think about the problem and maybe talk to the software engineers) should be able to provide you with instructions, or a small program to completely scrub their software from your system. Uninstall programs leaving remanents in the computer is not uncommon in the industry, but it sometimes takes a while for tech support and the engineers to figure it out. Tech Support is always the first to find out about problems with newly released programs or versions of programs, then they have to convince the designers that their "perfectly written" program is flawed. Depending on the software house, this may be an easy thing to do, or it may never happen. Good luck, Reed |

Joey's fix certainly helped me. It has always been a problem with install/uninstall for a long time. Files are left on your computer. I think the problem I had with the Magellan software is that it was mixing them up when trying to install one with the other. Anyway, I was able to clean up my disk easily, and I now have a complete list of install/uninstall programs available in Windows. The program will also allow you to clean the registry. You can email me for it, or probalby find something like it at tucows.com Look for a registry cleaner or something like that. |

Thanks so much. That sure makes sense to me. I'll eventually get around to fixing that. Most times I just think that it makes no sense: Here we are trying to get as far away from civilization as possible, yet we can accomplish that to the max carrying high tech electronics. Go figure... Sometimes we humans just seem like we make no sense! Or maybe just make things harder for ourselves?? Or probably - it's just me? I'm clueless!! |
