As nobody found a way to quiet down the roof rack over 55 mph??? Maybe a wind deflector??? Does a hule or Yakima fit??? Some insulation in the roof liner???

It's just really getting annoying...

Only way I've found to reduce the noise from my roof rack (not an adventure) is to take it off.

Or, close the windows, turn up the radio, and buy some MT tires. :-)

Other than that, Thom's right -- a lexan screen will help deflect more air up and over the roofline of the truck. Remember: Putting a rack up there is like putting a dog kennel on top of a FedEx truck, aerodynamically speaking...

With 4 Hellas up there, the wind noise is seriously reduced.

The problem with these damn racks is that they are the only ones that really look good on the Disco.

That's really interesting. My only problem is that i bought a XD version of the adventure rack ( closer to the roof than the normal rack ). So it if i get Hella 4000 x4 i can't lie anything flat on the rack ( lumber etc... ) I was thinking of only putting 2 on the extremity but i don't know if they clear the top of the rack ( going over ). Anybody outthere with that set-up???

I had just two. My car looked like Mickey Mouse. I had to get the two for the middle because it looked utterly ridiculous with big white ears.
We always just lay things on the hellas. The rack isn't flat to begin with.

Well, I don't know. I wouldn't go crazy putting stuff on them, and I wouldn't do it for long trips, but an occasional sheet of drywall laid on the lights on the way home from the hardware store is fine.

Pascal, why not consider some of the shorter Hella lights like the FF series? I think people have had good luck with them.

Just a thought.

Whenever I read posts about roof rack noise, I am surprised. I have the safety devices roof rack and it does not make any noise. I've got 2 pelican 1610's strapped to the rear of it with cam straps, and it is still totally quiet - even on highway, high speeds, all windows down and sunroofs open.

MT's on my truck are totally quiet too. I let apprx 20# out of each of them when going off road - then they can be very noisy on the road, but I try not to drive on pavement unless tires are full.

Sorry, you probably don't to hear that mine is quiet - but, I wonder why that is the case? There must be some kind of aerodynamic differences is all I can guess.

I really feel for you. I had a car that was noisy just when the when the sunroof was open (no roof rack on it) - and it drove me bloomin nuts.

Hope you figure out how to reduce the noise. :-) Jamie

Jamie, Do you have the High or Low version roof rack and does it have a floor? I am considering a roof rack and would like the quietest one I can find.

Gary.

You keep two Pelican 1610s on your rack at all times?

Jamie's ready to go on a cross-continent expedition at the drop of a hat.

She carries 4,500 lbs of equipment -- so much stuff that the rear sags, remember? :-)

I'm not sure of the actual weight but ut was enough to cause sagging in the rear -- remember the thread on her Rover needing a "tush lift"?

Nice looking truck, Rick!

Installing a checkerplate floor on the rack also cuts down the noise.

I had a bare naked Adventure roof rack on my D1 and it made a hell of a racket at highway speeds until I added 4 Hella 500's. The smaller size of the lights was just the right amount to almost reduce the sound back to pre-rack levels.

Here is my roof rack set up. No, I don't carry cases all the time nor do I carry 4500# of cargo all the time :-) I have been "practicing" carrying different loads and various ways of weight distribution around town, but mostly on the highway. Bill and Rachel Burke arrive next week and I begin training with him, so I'm doing what "legwork" I can on my own so that we can work on the more challenging aspects for the places I want to go and see. I don't know where all of those places are yet, but I know they will be awesome and beautiful. I am sure that they will not be sea level flatlands and really want to go up INTO those places and experience them - not just sit at the base of them going "oh, wow". Since my goal is to experience the wilderness while I am there, I am trying to do all I can to prep here. Playing around with loads so that Bill and I can do some simulated training here of crossing terrain while being a heavy truck loaded with gear and decorated like a noisy pigpen. I still have NOT gotten to the camping gear section yet! (I have no clue how in the world I will do at camping?? YIKES!!) My priority has been prepping rover for training - I can move on to the rest of what I will need whenever they return to Colorado.

Hope these pics give you good view of my roof rack and it's design. As you can see, I do not have flooring and have decided against it. The last thing I need is added weight. I just make sure that I move rover into my yard when loading rack - just in case I fall off while up there - better to fall in cushy grass rather than driveway. BTW, whoever made the post recently about standing on the rear tire, what a GREAT IDEA!! That has really helped me out since I read that and tried it. Now I don't always hae to climb onto the roof to secure items that are near the center. The cam straps are working GREAT for securing gear. I luv them because all I have to do is hang on them to get them tight.

I don't have roofrack lights either and don't plan on getting them. I don't want to subject myself to windsheild wash on nite runs. Since I did not want roof lights and Bill advised against them, I chose to follow John Lee's recommendation for sufficient lighting. Per his suggestion, I replaced my genuine safari lamps with 2 hella 4000 CORNERING beams. They are just awesome and provide so much light you could easily light up an area for remote aircraft landings (or maybe space ships?? ha ha!!)

The only light that I have on the roof rack is on the rear. It is the the hella double rear work lamp. I had it installed per the instructions on EE's website. I also have it wired with 2 relays so that I can isolate either side of it, or have them both on at the same time. I have both relays wired into a marine switch panel in my forward cabin (with an added fuse/switch "on top" of the 2 separate switches/relays and switches for added protection since they run with lots of juice. They have been wired independently of my main electrical system and I run a voltage regulator in the rear cargo door area so that I can monitor voltage while I am working in back of my turck - especially if I have lots of stuff up and running while truck is off.

That is probably way more info that you wanted, but thats my roofrack/lighting set up, Yeh, I know it's weird and I come up with nutty ideas sometimes, but this is working out well for me. Absolutely NO sound from roofrack, even straps are silent running. I usually have windows down and sunroofs open, I like the fresh air. My biggest problem is hair whipping in my face. Oh well, I might look dopey in braids and bandanas - but at least I can see where I am going!

Good luck fixing that noise. Truly, that would irritate me and drive me bananas, I'd just have to find solution or remove rack. That being said, I sure hope that you find a way to silence it!! :-) :-) Jamie

Pascal, The 4K's are great lights, I have four on my rack as well. However with this big of a light you have a larger area to act as an "Air Brake" you may want to consider going with a smaller light, some people are running the 100s FF (ovals)they seem to put-out some good light. With having the air brake your MPG will drop. Just a thought.

I went with a VAn size fairing from Yakima

It fits perfect, and with a litte creativity, the round yakima bar clips fit the adventure rack perfect.

for like 30 bucks, its a great fix.

For sure Andrew.

Before, after, during, in front, behind, inside, on top, submerged...let's see that puppy/catfish/warthog in action!

If you feel brave/crazy, even do a "Gods Must be Crazy" thing and have it hanging by its winch!! :-)

There you go Jamie. You've got your homework assignment. And if you really want to earn your stripes, have a picture of you in your truck getting chased by a rhino...or a warthog, we're flexible. :-)

I'll have to research how I put a photo gallery on Dweb. First I'll have to find it. I've never seen it.

How many points if I get pics with animals on my roof? How many points if I stop at one of those Cracker Barrel highway restaurants, buy a few of their nifty rockers, strap to the roof, and charge passengers for off road tours? Hmmm... Potential for income while off roading, might have to have a release from liability for them to sign, just in case the get knocked off by low branches.

Here's a few B4 pics:

I have 4 Hella FF300 on top of my 110 rollcage.
They give good light with the advantage of being
a low profile design for when I have our kayaks on the roof.
