96 Disco with 110K miles A) Today, when unlocking the door (passenger side), it was very difficult to turn the key to unlock, very hard to turn the key to lock or unlock. Later today, the problem seemed to have gone away. I just tried it and the same problem, B) Coolant leak from head gasket. I am confident it is the head cylinder gasket. How much should I expect to pay for its replacement? Any idea who can do the job in Souther California (besides the dealer) |

Labor rates vary so much, it would be difficult to say what the gakset replacement would cost. Atlantic British has the head gasket set for about $120. Everything is relatively easy to get to on the Disco, why not save the coin and do it yourself? As a guess, I would bet you will pay probably $600-800 in labor for a a head gasket replacement. Not to mention the fact that almost any mechanic is going to find "other" problems allegedly requiring immediate attention. If you do the job yourself, be sure to have the heads checked to make sure they are not warped or cracked. Typically, if an aluminum engine has been hot, there can be cracking/warping issues. |

Thanks Kris. You bring up good point. With my luck and lack of space, I would probably f..k thinks up more. I am competent when it come to work on the Rover but, I feel this one is out my league. I was quoted $1500 from an independent Rover shop (highly recommended by a wheeling partner). The other thought that crossed my mind, a new 4.0 or 4.6 engine! I got 110K currently. |
