I tried doing a search for this but couldn't find anything of relevance. I want to install an in-dash cd player to replace the existing factory unit. I went to the local Curcuit City and they informed me that it was not possible to install such a set-up as they had nothing that was compatible with the existing wiring. Has anyone found a way around this? I'd rather have an in-dash unit instead of a cd changer under the seat. thanks...

86 VW wiring harness should do it. That will hook up to your current wires, then they'll have to go from there.

I had the same run-around for about 6 months, said screw it and just installed new components. Ran new speaker wires, put in new speakers, and put in a new head unit. All in all I think I spent about 300 bucks.

The new 2004 Discovery S now comes with an in-dash CD player. You may be able to swap that into your car with no issues at all. I haven't attempted it, but it is certainly worth looking in to.

I have an aftermarket deck in my truck, came that way when I got mine used. Looks like they dide run new speaker wires, which can kinda be a PITA, but not so bad if you have some time and patience. Beats having the crappy stock deck...

Ethan,

In the archives, there are threads that have the wiring diagrams listed. I have talked to several car audio vendors and they all aggree that a common adapter for LR does not exist. Here is just one thread that I found searching in the archives dating back 360 days:

../17/11348.html>

There are other threads that mention this VW harness and issues with it.

Good Luck,
Paul

Just a note from my experience... you will have to rewire your system if you put an aftermarket deck on. There is a lot of engine whine that will come thru your system if you do not rewire. LR built the head unit & amp as a blended unit, if you remove one of the pieces the other will cause some feedback into your system. $50 of insulated wire & 3 hours of time and you can rewire the truck...

Tell the guys at Circuit City they are full of it. Granted there is no wiring harness, that I know of, in production they can still wire up your receiver. It sounds like they just did not want to do it. I do not have it here with me, but if you want I can email you a digram of what wires go where. You can do it yourself in about 2-3 hours with simple tools. The rear subs will no longer work, so a small sub and amp would do wonders to the sound quality. Bazoka tubes are nice because they do not take up much room and can be removed real easy. Worth looking into.

To add onto what Ed said, I had some noise from the deck after installation, and I had to run a new ground wire. After doing this, I had no noise, or alternator wine.

So the only two wires I kept were the Power and Accessory Power wires, rest of it was new.
