Alright, another earth-shattering post about tire choice, but hey, I'm bored at work so I figured I would solicit inputs.
Right now I am looking to go to 235/85/16s for my DI, I currently have 265/70/16 BFG AT Kos on and they're ok but not great. I am looking to stay in the BFG line and am interested in opionions on MTs vice Commerical T/As, which I hear are the closest to trac-edges that are currently in production.

My truck is a daily driver, and being in Norfolk Va means I have to drive a fair distance to do the kind of wheeling I like so time on the highway is a consideration.

My take is there isn't too much difference between the tires as I read the BFG website, but what is the ground truth?
Thanks-
Ray

I went with the Commericial T/A-tractions for the wife's Disco....

...and they've worn badly! They're LOUD now, worse than many mud-tires.

These are supposed to be the modern-equivelent to the Trac-Edge, but they're not as good... I wish I had stuck with the Dunlop R/Ts.... the place we got the BFGs didn't carry Dunlop, had a great price on the BFG's, but... wish I had either gotten the A/T for her, or gone elsewhere and gotten the Dunlops....

MTs, have to be better than these Commericals.... can't be louder, have to perform better off-road....

Or, go with Goodyear MTRs.... haven't heard anyone complain about them.

FWIW...

LOL

ron brown did...he said they were worse then the stock michilins

but he is the only one I have ever heard complain about them, everybody else raves about them

Ray,

you may try siping the BFG MT....siping makes them better on wet roads and quiets them down a good deal as well.

and it looks cool too...

On a more serious note, the siping has been a positive thing for a lot of people.

I started researching a little more about siping-I knew basically what it was but I wanted to see if it would be better to do it myself or have a shop do it (conclusion-do it myself, as the machines are not very precise and it doesn't appear that difficult with a hot knife or some other appropriate tool) but then I came across a nice statement regarding the state of Va and their policy against siping (or at least against passing vehicles for inspection with siped tires)

The Disco did just pass inspection though...and I could always keep my current A/T's in like, my daughters room within our apartment...:-)
In all seriousness, thanks for the feedback. This looks to be an early x-mas present to myself.

siping has been done on big trucks for 50 years

I have had all my tires siped for a decade on all my vehicles.

I would strongly reccomend it for MT's on the road and I would also say pay to have it done right, the equipment out there is plenty accurate and as far as depth of cut much more so then free hand .

MTRs suck, but they look cool.

MTs are pretty cool looking but I have never had them.

Ron,
HOw bout some specifics on WHY you dont like the MTR's. Everyone else I've heard from seems to like them. Also, what are you coparing them to. Do they suck in Mud compared to Super Swampers? (DUH!!) Do they suck on Road compared to Pirelli's? Or do they suck in some area compared to a similar tire. Like say the Dunlop RT's, or BFG MT, or ?????
Thanks
Todd

If your MTR's suck, you bought the wrong tires for where you wheel....
I don't know if you have 'Discount Tires" where you live, but they sipe tires all the time. And they still warranty the tires so I would guess its safe. I've done my swampers myself. Its easy, just don't go to deep or you'll chunk pieces on the rocks. Before I bought a used grooving iron, I used a cut-off disc in an angle grinder. Messy, but it worked. Of course wih swampers you have a lot of lug to work with. For better wet traction on the street, don't go very deep. A 1/4 inch is too far. When the tires wear down to the bottom of the sipe, just re-sipe.
