Would switching to 10 spline Alloy axles be almost as good as going up to a 24 spline?

i'm not aware of anyone making HD ten spline. i'd reckon HD ten spline would be better than stock 24 spline (if bother were brand new)

fact is 24 spline arent even that good when new.

HD 24 spine are good though.

Brian,
No, if you are going to upgrade, do it right and go with 24's. The loose talk around town about the stock stuff is that the old 10 splines are as tuff as the 24 spline. but then again, you are talking alloy, so this begs the question of who's? Great Basin has the Maxi-drive stuff which is the best bet. the Ashcroft stuff is not as strong, being that they are only hardened on the outside... yada yada.
Anyway, go 24 and when you do, check into the GBR Maxi drive stuff. Of course, this will open the door for you to employ a Detroit :D :D

Good luck

why 10 spline alloys? do you have a source? i'm sure it's cheaper to "upgrade" to 10 spline alloys since you can keep your stock diff. another thing to consider is that "if" the alloy axle is stronger than stock axles you'r putting your diff will be the weak link in the system. either way once you blow the diff, like jon suggested... detroit... then GBR 24 spline axles.

good luck... by the way... nice clean classic.

The fronts are about the same overall strengths. That is because there is a place on the 24 spline front axle where the diameter is just 1".

The 24 spline rear is much better. And the rear is where you need the most strength.

The 24 splines have a lot more options to upgrade. They are also cheaper and esier to get the stock LR parts. I think it is worth the switch if you are ambitious in your hill climbs.

However now that you have brought up the subject; it could be a good thing to just upgrade the 10 spline rears. If you just put alloys in the rear(and keep the original as a spare), that would be remakably easy. It would be just a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousands that you will spend if you upgrade everything.

You may also be able to find some used 10 spline "lockers" and alloy axles from someone who has decided now to spend thousands on the larger driveline.

So there is hope of doing something for cheap, otherwise start saving.

Thanks all, and thanks Han for the compliment. The excellent condition of the truck is compliments of Bill Bettridge. It has been a great starting point for a nice off-roader. So far, I've got OME medium springs, Rancho 5000 shocks, Free flowing Magnaflow exhaust, K&N filter and 245/75/16 Goodyear MTR's. I also have a steering damper relocation kit that I haven't installed. Hopefully very soon I'll add a winch and bumper (after upgrading the springs to HD), skid plates and sliders along with a Hannibal roof rack.

Randall, That is the way all of my upgrades have gone, find it cheap and do it. So I would like to start with Alloy 10 splines for now as this truck spends 90% of the time on road. It's not ever going to be an abused off-roader. So for now spending $1000's on that part of the truck isn't an option.

With that said, Does anyone know if 10 spline Alloys exist? If so, who sells them?

Thanks again,
Brian

Brian,
Considering that you dont intend to wheel your lovely RRC too much, I'd suggest not bothering with the upgrade. I'm not to sure anyone does make a 10 spline alloy anyway. I say this from the experience of doing a lot of wheeling in my old pig for quite some time on the 10 splines with a locker and never breaking them. just keep a light foot and dont put a locker in (like my dumb-ass) and you should be fine. The stockers are strong enough for light/ moderate applications.
And just a lil' FYI, I am about to do the upgrade we are talking about (24's/ Detroit) and you can get the whole thing as a kit for $925.00~ then ya gotta put it in :D
Anyway, nice rig.
Keep on building.

Brian,

I just bought a set of used rear 10-spline axles in perfect shape from someone here on dweb for $25. Just buy a spare set for cheap and throw it in the truck when you go wheeling. I too was concerned with the strength of the 10-spline axles when I first got my 92 RRC, but have wheeled it hard and have not had any problems. I wouldn't worry about it too much, I wouldn't waste my money in hunting down some alloy 10 splines, but if you do upgrade then go 24.

Probably the way to go. I'll just buy a spare and not worry about it unless I break one.

Thanks.

I searched for some 10 spline alloys on the internet, and apparently they don't exist. Mayby I was remembering HD 1" axles for the series type trucks.

Ron Ammon once said he could replace an axle faster than change engine oil; once, I saw him breaking one, and by the time I walked back to him he was almost finished!

lol
Brian, what year is your RRC?
I have a pair of 10-spline axles that I bought by mistake - if they fit yours, you can have them.

Peter, you don't happen to have any GBR 24 splines that you bought by mistake, do you? I'd be happy to take them off your hands :-)

Steve, out of garage full of junk, the only thing missing is a set of GBR 24-splines!

Brian, I might have your spare axleshafts. Can anyone confirm this - the ones I am talking about don't have end caps integral to the axle.
