Hey all, I am having a problem with my 94 Disco. When turning at slow speeds the brakes seem to fail. Its like the anti lock system is pulsing the brakes. They become firm and you have to press hard to get them to stop. Very strange and somewhat scary. It only occurs once and a while but I want to fix it. Any ideas. Im thinking ABS sensor but it doesnt seem to matter which way you turn. thanks Gordo |

Pulsing is exactly what happens when the ABS system is activated and doing exactly what it is designed to do. You are doing the right thing by continuing to press the brake pedal.

yes and no yes pulsing is what the system does but if the system kicks in too early or all the time it may be a sign of a bad sensor or a contaminated tone ring . I have never heard of it yet in discos but a bad inner spindle bearing will cause ABS problems on some vehicles because the distance between the tone ring and sensor changes as the braking load moves the stub shaft in the spindle. the fact that Gordon's truck is a 94 makes me think it may be time to go through the swivel balls completly to check them out , any number of things could be causing or contributing to his ABS problem. |

Disconnect the ABS pump until you get it figured out/repaired or you may find yourself without brakes completely. Bill |

Muskyman, do you mean the stub axle bearing? also do you think any problems within the swivel would be pretty obvious once inside there? thanks, Wes |

I had a very similar problem on my 95 RRC and finally fixed it over the weekend. On my drivers side top swivel pin bearing one of the actual bearings had come out of the race and was just floating in that well. It was not letting things sit flush and every time I turned my wheel it would push the sensor out a bit causing an abs malfunction. Took a while but glad to have it fixed |

Gordo - if you disconnected the pump, then it cannot happen (?). The pump cannot run and pulse the brakes without power going to it. If there is still a braking problem, it must be hydraulic circuit related and therefore much more serious. I'd check it out right away. Bill |

start to look for break fluid leaks as mentioned above. maybe swollen flex hoses. leaky calipers etc. air in the system. does your brake fluid look brown? if so then flush it , it could be contamated. any of this can lead to spongy peddel |

Hi Bill, I am sorry my note was confusing. the problem occured before I decided to disconnect the ABS. I have had it unhooked two days and no problems with the brakes. thanks. Gordo |
