I am pulling my 3.9 due to compression issues. Considering a 4.0 short block and heads. What else is involved in the transfer? INTAKE, distributor??? Would like to keep is simple...

If you are going to make the swap, I heard that a 4.6 is a much better swap.

If it is a 94/95 DISCO you might be able to use 4.0 heads (not sure have to check to make sure all the brackets line up, I know on a V belt RR you need to retain 3.9 heads). With a new 4.0 short block you need to swap the rest of the 3.9 stuff over and put a spacer on the crank pulley to make it fit. Cam update needs to be done if not already done on 94 discos.

Why wouldn't you just fix the old one.

Check the RPi website --

Don't bother with a 4.0, go for the 4.6 -- it's a big boost in power over the 3.9/4.0.

If your 3.9 heads, oil pump/front cover, water pump, camshaft, timing gear etc. are in excellent shape, they will work on the 4.6 short block. However, it might be more worth your while to get a long block with new and updated everything if you've got a lot of miles on your 3.9, especially if it's been run out of oil or overheated.

You'll also need a Tornado chip in the ECU so it won't run too lean and burn up.

You may need to use your 3.9 oil pan but might as well get a new oil pick up tube while you've got it off.

Let me help Ed out here. The 4.0 he has offered is virtually free.

I put a 4.6 into my 3.9 distributor Disco last winter. I used the 4.6 heads but shortened the guides, 3.9 oil pan, front cover (new), intake and exhaust. I had my crank shortened, but the spacer would work more easily. I used an RPi4 cam, shortened the intake stacks and fitted a 4.2 Range Rover chip. Pulls a heavy Disco with 32" tires very strongly, with average fuel around 12 mpg

Take the 4.0, I don't believe the box style intake plenum you have will give you a positive result on a 4.6. While it can pull plenty of air, you may not feel any improvement in torque.

That damn furby again... SLEDGEHAMMER

As far as the parts transferring from one vehicle to the other, it is my understanding that the intake will work. Not sure about any other components. What year is the 4.0 out of? Or is Curtis marinating something in the front end for the good ole California boys?

If and when is quits snowing here, I will be able to complete the 3.9 extraction. At that point I will be able to define the extent of damage. I plan on picking up the 4.0 block and heads due to the opportunity. I had no idea the amount of banter Furby was going to generate.
TOO FUNNY.
