My Disco 2003 produces a whiny, high pitch sound when I press the accelator. I brought it back to the dealership twice. First, they said is was the front end differential and that they fixed the noise problem. Not the case. I brought it back a second time and had the mechanic drive with me, and he concered with my finding. I left my SUV for two days with the Dealer hoping the problem would be fixed. They concluded (manager & technician) that the sound was inherent with the Discovery. I demanded to drive a similar vechicle on their lot and found that the other Discovery 2003 did not produce the same annoying, faint siren sound. Has anyone experience this noise in their 2003 Discovery. Please help identify this problem and suggestions to solving this mystery.
Thank you

check the t-case &/or the serpentine belt. My money's on the t-case. Also find another dealer service dept. sounds like they don't keep up on their inservice tech meetings.
I had a bad t-case @6k mi. & belt was not grooved properly by mfgr. On Warranty BTW.

Check the T-Case, sounds like there might be a bad batch of T-Cases again. There was a problem with some T-Cases made in 95, the low gearset did not have enough clearance to get lubrication to the gears and shaft eventually it siezes, then you really hear it (sounds like an F1 car). Try to make them replace or repair your T-Case under warranty

What about the fan clutch? My D1 produced a similar sound at idle and during acceleration, and it turned out that sucker was about to seize.

Alfonso,

experiencing this at all speeds, just highway, etc.? Our new '01 D2 whined at about 60 MPH, took it back to the dealer, they replaced the t-box, now it whines at 65.

Is it like a low or hight pitched whistle as appose to a whiny sound?
I'v had a hight pitched whistle as I've accelerated in my d1 in the past and its seemed to have settled it's self.
No bloody idea what it was.

Someone asked me about the whiny sound in my 1999 Disco II and my mechanic says that almost all DIIs do that. They aren't sure where it comes from, and have tried figuring it out. But all the people that have this sound have no engine problems. You can hear it more when I am in low range and travelling slowly. Rip your resonator off and they deeper throaty sound helps mask it a bit.

Mine whined like this, but after I lifted it, put on bigger tires, rear diff, sliders, removed the sway bars, & some other stuff she quit driving it altogether.

I've recently started to get that sound in my '96. It's the radio picking up a buzz from the alternator - though the alternator sounds just fine when I listen to it with a stethoscope. The noise happens no matter if the radio or CD is selected, and even when turned all the way down.

Now if someone can tell me what *that* means....

Cheers

Alfonso,

I've got an '03 Discovery S. I have a slight whining noise at highway speeds (around 70 mph). When the radio is off, or turned down very low, I notice the whine. I had heard that it's an inherent problem with the Land Rover transfer cases. I guess I just accept it.

Alfonso,

I have a 2003 HSE. I have the same noise that you are talking about. I just noticed it on the way home acutually.

Hey Sandy, I got the exact same thing. Brand new alternator that is properly grounded, high-pitched whistle that comes through the radio (used to whistle with the old alternator as well). no idea on how to fix.
