The 04's have been out for a while... and the CDL is the thing. I test-drove a G4 Edition a few weeks ago. Fun stuff.

The only thing uglier than that orange beast with silly looking rubberized grocery cart bumper is the 05 in the same shade.

I do like the seats though.

I was checking out an '04 recently when i was at the dealers picking my car up after some more warranty work. I didnt think it was anything special. It had the G4 or Trek package, dont remember what its called exactly, but it was basically some stickers and orange paint. Plus the salesman didnt know what cdl was and wheni explained it to him, he said it didnt have it and didnt think it was coming back, although it is on the website.

Seems almost blasphemous, huh?

BTW, anyone know if I can fit the '04 CDL ETC algorithms into my '99 w/aftermarket CDL lever?

So we have to wait to get through the disco 3 until it turns into something like the defender?

Michael, I think the '04 cdl is fairly complicated elictrical system. looking at the models, it does not appear to have a lever, it is almost like a detroit locker, except unlocked untill sensing wheel spin, then a computer locks the Diff. I could be way off though, this is just a theory, being as how i did not see a handle and the limited description of the cdl on the website. there is probably a way to fix a switch to it to turn it on/off on command, similar to turning off etc, hopefully.
Is there anyone that knows more about this system?

Got some e-mail from Land Rover today, urging me to visit their site and see the "Trail Editions." Sounded exciting - maybe four different offroad specials with extra equipment! But all it is is that squishy brush bar and a couple of Hellas. Too bad.

Sorry, I was just playin around. I guess the sarcasm just didn't come thru. :-)

FWIW, concensus seems to be that the CDL for '04 will be the same as it always has been (or hasn't been for the unlucky). I believe that everywhere in the world except NA got the CDL back in the D2 last year, but they have new software for the ETC to go with it.

Rick - I sat in an 04 a couple weeks ago and it doesn't look any different from the 03 as far as the CDL is concerned. The lever is still there, all they've done is make the CDL actually lock now...as far as I can tell and what the Sales manager relayed to me. I still prefer my D1 to it.

As far as I understand, it works like the old CDL but the manager was saying something about some limitations on it because of the ETC. Mainly you can't drive over 84 km/h with it locked. He claimed you could go as high as 120 km/h with the D1s locked but I'm not too sure about those numbers. They sound kinda high.

The 04's are quite posh inside. The one I was sitting in was an SE7 and decked out quite nicely. When they start coming back from lease returns, they might be a great platform to modify from. They seem a bit "beefier".

Ill check out the '04 again next time im at the dealers. Im sure itll be soon, i was getting some heavy vibrations today. Maybe this time a salesman who knows what cdl is will help me out. Maybe they'll let me test drive it into the pine barrens.
