I read an earlier post regarding a whine under load towards front of vehicle. I have the same sound/problem on my 96 disco. It was mentioned it could be the pinion bearing. Could someone please tell what it is /how you can tell and how/how much to fix.
(Recently changed fluid in diffs and trans.)
Thanks in advance

#9 it's been a while but I remember mine would whine/low squeal kinda sound at float. Float is when you excelerate then let off the gas, the bit between is float. that was the only time did it, but I might of caught it real soon. You can fix it yourself just get a manual or ask here for the preload. Change the seals while your down there. Air tools help. I did a gear change at the same time, you might be able to get at it from the driveshaft side with out even pulling the cover. Some one here will chime in and let us know. This place rocks.diff

Brent, #4 is the differential carrier bearing.

Jay, do you get the whine all of the time; just under load; or just when cruising w/o depressing the throttle?

You can do it, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you've done it before. Theres quite a few steps that need to be done correctly in there including some fine measurements to set the pinion height. Not that people dont do it themselves...you'll need air tools and a dial indicator. Also you will need to remove the old bearings and seat the new ones - this involves a certain amount of hard drifting the bearings into place - not for the weak stomache (like me). You can save a bunch of money by removing the diff and taking it in to a mechanic. I think the bearings for the pinion are nos 9 & 11.

Joe,
It whines while under load and when cruising w/o depressing the throttle. Once I let off the gas it goes away.

That could also be a u-joint. If you haven't recently, give all of them a good greasing and check them to be sure they are tight.

You may also want to consider dropping one driveshaft at a time to see if the sound goes away when driving.
