Does anyone out there know the inside scoop on the Defender 110 that they showed at SEMA? Is this something that I might go out and order from Land Rover? If anyone has more info, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is real sweet! But it doesn't look like an air-bag wheel so I guess we can't get one....shame, the prices people ask for defenders here is nuts! I bet if they would import 'em again the price would be more real.

Karl-
Over on the pirate 4x4 board they have a thread going about it, to include a copy of the press release text and you can see a pic of the 501/500 Special Vehicles Plate.
Cutter's point is well taken, amoung a variety of other things that would prohibit a restart of 110's just coming over, and as much as I would love one I'm not holding my breath.
That being said check out the 'other' board and see what's being said there.

Not sure about the US, but there's a company in Canada on the west coast (Pacific Custom Land Rovers) that imports Defenders in. He seems to get quite a few D110's and will customize them to what you want. I've spoken to the fellow and he's a very amicable guy. He's brought in TDI's, 5-speeds, automatics, seems like pretty much whatever you want, just let him know and he gets them into Canada somehow legally.

Here are a few pictures of the last group he brought in. The red one came in late August and an epsom green one arrived a few weeks ago.

Alan,
That's just mean! Its like reading the classifieds of LRM or LROI and realizing how cheap those things are in the UK but knowing they can't come here (at least not until they're 25) Brittanica Restorations website has some great looking Defenders too, I guess they're legal in Canada. None of the ones you showed even have the internal/external roll cage...

Just think though, 5 more years and we can all start scouring for 1983 110s to refurbish...
Maybe I'll just stick with my Disco.

LOL, sorry Ray. Don't mean to tease you.

He mainly brings in mid-80s trucks and usually prices them in the mid $30k CDN mark so not overly expensive compared to some I've seen but they're still quite rare. Not a lot of people know what Defenders are unless they're in the 4x4 world. I'm just waiting for the prices to drop more. $30k CDN is still a lot for a truck to drive around in the bush with.

Alan,
That is still a pretty hefty chunk of change, but not too bad. I had always figured I would wait until the 1983-84 One-tens started being legal and maybe get one of those and redo the whole thing to better than new.
Either that or try to get an ex-MOD shell and build it the way I want.
All of that requires a lot more time and $$$ than I have at this time.

Ray,

I was at a heavy equipment yard about 2 weeks ago where this fellow brings in all kinds of stuff like front-end loaders and military equipment. i was snooping around the yard and found 3 ex-MOD D110s there. All from British military. One still had a gun turret hole over the passenger seat. He wanted something like $7900 CDN for each of them. They all have rebuilt engines. All in a little rougher shape but very easy to work with by the looks of it. Very little that you could bung up and feel bad about it. They would actually make very nice trail rigs.

Land Rover is trying to bring the CKD kit in to the US. The dealerships will sell you a kit, and you can put it together yourself. And then register it as a kit car, thus it is legal. There are a few more details to it, but that is the basic idea.

That would be cool. I don't really care if it wasn't actually assembled in Solihull.

A guy at MAR had a ex-MOD D90 that he got without the engine and then dropped a 200TDI into, that truck was awesome, and like you said its a great trail rig b/c you really don't need to worry about the paint, interior, etc so its straight for wheelin.

I heared the CKD kit will only come by the dozen and that the intent was to distribute it to manufacturers that will make them to certain standards (helping with liability issues) If the individual kit option is true that's awesome.
According to the ongoing discussion here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=b224213e2460865f768782b531a60400 &threadid=191422&perpage=25&pagenumber=1
the cost is still prohibitive (in my book) at $50k. Still very interesting, but I have to agree with the principle author of the POR post that it deserves to be treated with a lot of skepticism till it's actually here.
We can all dream the dream though...

Jaime - if you go to the LR Chronicle site you'll find something about the proposed CKD kit if that's what you mean.

Ray - I know a fellow here that I've wheeled with a few times that bought a whole bunch of ex-MOD Defenders from the nearby military base and built his own trucks out of the spare parts. That looks like the best route to go if you want a Defender relatively inexpensively. This fellow is now playing around with turning one of the trucks into an automatic. He doesn't want a whole lot for them either. Last time I talked to him, it sounded like he wanted between $6k - $10k for one and he just does this for fun on the side.

Alan-
That's good info to have, I might look into it in the future. Right now my wife has a mantra: "no new vehicles till the student loans are paid off" Once that is done we have an understanding that I can look at doing the 2.8l conversion or think about getting a Defender. I don't really want a new car, just to improve on the Rover I have or go for an old Defender to make into my ultimate expedition truck. Part of that quasi-plan is the hope that I will get sent to England (or somewhere else in Europe) in the future either as part of my current job or if I move on with my next one. For me all of these things will come together in a few years, I just have to be a little paitent (which I'm not so great at), and it should be at a time when I can make the most of it.

Now if I could just convince her that the crewcab is the way to go over the wagon...

Here's a photo of the 110 at the SEMA show that I took today. I spoke to Charles of Rover Accessories and he stated that they built the 110, so I guess they are doing the CKD thing.

OK, so, what does this all mean? Is anyone ACTUALLY going to sell these in the U.S. or are we just going to see two or three at dealerships and as press wagons?

BTW - good news and bad - looks like Rover lost the bid for the new generation of military vehicles for Britain. Bad for Rover, good for us, more ex-MODs hitting the auction market. Already lots of them for sale in Canada.

I spoke with the Land Rover Rep at SEMA last week, they are just trying to get intrest in this vehicle (like they really need to gain more) by showing this truck. It can not be bought in the US or licenced as a kit car. They want to develope a market and then re-introduce it. By the way it was very sweet.

Jealous? I thought nobody here wanted a Defender. Or at least that's what everyone has been saying the past few years.

We never even made it to the Main Hall where that that Defender was being displayed. We were too busy taking care of business in the South Hall when time ran out and the show closed.

Mike, that was just sarcasm on my part. I always crack up when I read the Defender envy threads here. Everyone here claims he doesn't want a Defender, but whenever there's some teaser or news leak about the Defender possibly coming back, lots of people forget their "I don't have Defender envy" posturing and let loose. Same goes for when someone claims XYZ Co. is legally importing defenders.

D110 Tdi powerstroke auto, with A/C, 3 inch lift, S.D. roof rack, sliders, ARB/winch, seating for 9, and a few other little accessories -- last car I would ever buy.

Hows that for Defender envy?

Nothing against a 90, but I'll take the Disco over a 90 - more practical and all that.

Impractical - that's what a Cessna 150, 150hp, climb prop, taildragger, tundra tires, STOL wings, and pilot's license is for.

I HAVE to drive the fam around and tow the camper trailer - besides, if I get the D90 now, I may not be able to afford the D110 when it comes my way!
