I just got a new Flowmaster 50 SUV series, and my car's been a little grumpy when idling.

But these past few days when I crank her up first thing in the morning, the idle level just goes straight to the regular idle (1800 RPM's), and doesn't stay up (lik 2200-2400) like how I remember it did when it was cold, and like most cars do.

Am I remembering wrong? Or is it supposed to idle high when the engine's cold in the mornings?

I have a lot of "mist" or "smoke" (because it's damn cold now in Seattle) coming out of my exhaust for the first 10-15 minutes of driving in the morning (a decent amount more than all the other cars I see around) also. Is that normal for a Disco, or is it because I put on a Flowmaster?

10-15 minutes of steamy discharge (which my doctor says is normal :-)) here in Wisconsin, Eric.

Your normal idle is that high? I idle at 750rpm, with "fast" idle at about 1250-1500rpm...

I'm lucky if my fast idle is over 1000. :-)

damn, i'm an idiot. My idle isn't 1800, it's like 800. It still doesn't rev high when cold, and it seems like the engine doesn't really like it either. It kind of putters a big when I start it up. ideas why?

Anyone with an older Rig should pull out their stepper motor and clean it with Carb cleaner every once in a while, you will be surprise how good this is for your car, it idle's better, it starts better and it even runs better. Get a large spanner, unplug the multiplug from the side of the stepper motor and twist it off. Spray a good amount of Carb cleaner all around and inside the end of the Stepper Motor that goes into the plenum chamber and screw it back in, that's it, fifteen minutes tops!!!

Andy, Hey buddy. I bet it's damn cold in Wisconsin huh?

ummm... I've seen that not people respond when people ask these types of things, but where and what does the stepper motor look like? I'd really like to clean it, i've heard so many people talk about it!

Thanks
Eric

Oh, if it makes a difference. The exhaust setup I got is actually 2 mufflers.

I got a Flowmaster 50 SUV with center in center out and custom piping, and another muffler (some generic performance one) in back where the resinator used to be.

I love it. It's pretty damn quiet, but has a really really low toned grumble (much lower sound than just the flowmaster) almost inaudible from the inside. I originally put on just the Flowmaster, but the sound drove me nuts and was too loud for my tastes....

Before that, I tried out a Flowmaster 40 Delta, and that was damn loud and I got it switched off after 2 days!

I don't think this could be a cause of my probs, but I thought i'd mention it....

Forgot to mention, the performance I gained from the mufflers is quite amazing I think. I can actually merge on to freeways now without causing traffic jams behind me... haha

In Milwaukee it's in the 30's and 40's, not too bad...next weekend it's gonna be cold up north for camping and wheeling though! :-)

I think I have a pic somewhere of where the stepper/IAC is -- otherwise someone will post it here first!

anyone? just an approximate "it looks like this, about this big, and is located around here" would suffice too...

At the front (headlights) side of the intake plenum. It's about the size of a Matchbox car :-), and removes with two bolts, each of which is removed with a (I'm going from memory here) 5.5mm nut driver. There's a wiring harness that goes into it as well, and a small hose looping from the plenum to ???? right nearby.

Eric, do you still have my phone number? If so give me a call tonight and I'll walk you through it. Otherwise email me at this address -- NOT the one in my profile and we'll get in touch.

It depends on what year you have. On the older models the stepper sits at the back of the plenum chamber (back being close to the firewall). It looks like a huge sparkplug, and needs a big wrench to take it off. It attaches to the plenum chamber (thing that says 3.9L on it).

I simply replaced mine with a new one from NAPA, cleaning it didnt seem to help. For 30 bucks, new always makes me feel better.

It has a 4-prong multi-plug attached to the butt of it.

Does GM use the same stepper motor. If so I think my brother has an extra one I can use.

cleaned mine today, and it seems like my trucks starting a little better. It still doesn'tm rev high to warm up, but atleast it doesn't feel like it's not going to crank or die. Thanks Andy for your help! If anyone else needs instructions, i'd be happy to pass along the info too. It's quite easy and takes like 10 minutes...
