I did a quick search through the archives & came up empty... Can you tell me what type of antifreeze to top off with - and could you give me a run-down on the different types & why you'd choose one or the other? (Upstate NY, '03, garage parked in winter) Thanks!

I used Prestone premixed. Make sure it's suitable for aluminum block and the operating temperature range of the coolant works in your climate.

2 gallons should do the trick.

It needs to be phosphate free, other than that the brand choice is pretty much up to you.

I usually mix my antifreeze with distilled water instead of water from the tap. Overkill maybe, but it keeps some of the calcium and other impurities in the tap water out of your radiator.

So is my dealer scamming me??

I phoned before reading your replies & he said I have to buy their "LR Approved" stuff at $35 a gallon. He said you can't just go to Autozone or whatever because they won't have it.

PS Axel - from what I've read, it's best to stay away from water period... am I wrong?

Many Thanks!

The coolant should be mixed with distilled water at 50/50 (give or take depending upon your climate).

If your landie is still under warranty they may say that if you don't use approved LR stuff it will void the warranty or some such nonsense. BUT, I think they have to prove that what you did caused whatever problem you could have. IIRC

OAT (organic acid technology) type antifreeze is what you need. DexCool is one brand but there are others. Mix as directed.

A buddy of mine had serious problems with his 95 Disco using DexCool. It accelerated wear on his radiator and he needed a new intake gasket and radiator. He said it might have resulted from mixing DexCool and regular coolant, rather than the product itself. The LR service guy told him not to use DexCool at all.

Had it not been for this incident I wouldn't have known any different.

John,
I am not sure what the 95 D1 came with in its cooling system from the factory as 95 was a transition year for some manufactures. However, this link http://bioengr.ag.utk.edu/Extension/ExtProg/machinery/Articles/engcool.htm
provides a short synopsis of what likely happened to your buddies cooling system. Eric above has a 03 D2, all D2s have carboxylate formula/organic acid technology (OAT) based coolants in them. As an aside, the machinist I use has shown me aluminum heads/blocks/intakes that were long time users of the green freeze....its not pretty. Fine for iron blocks....pink is better for aluminium.

FWIW

Thanks guys - really helpful posts...
In fact one of the service guys said DexCool was fine, or any other brand using OAT. The manual further recommends Havoline. The service guy said they wouldn't mix it though - they'd just top it off straight as we're only talking about .5 liter to 1 liter or so...
Thanks again for responding!
