I have a new winch (Superwinch S9000) and would like to replace the hook that came with it with a safety hook of some sort like this one: http://www.myakkaoutfitters.com/images/safetyhook-new.jpg. Anyone have any experience or advice? Bill Mallin Web Dood Houston Land Rover Club http://www.houstonlandroverclub.com 2001 Disco AKA "Sherman"

You can eather bring your truck to someone to put a new hoop on around the new hook, or use a sutable shackle and replace it yourself, |

Yes yes... My question is which safety hooks are the best? Which ones are you folks using that work well, etc.? The one that comes with the winch is not a safety hook; it's a plain vanilla one. Bill Mallin Web Dood Houston Land Rover Club http://www.houstonlandroverclub.com 2001 Disco AKA "Sherman"

if your using a winch rope, a rigger at a boat shop can splice it in for you. |

Rob, I'm with you on this. Here's the safest winch hook you can buy and it costs about 15 bucks. It's not fancy, but it works as well as anything else out there and I have never even heard of someone breaking one. www.expeditionexchange.com-hochung-B028_25.jpg

These hooks are great, except in the winter they freeze up with ice in the latch lock mechanism. You can't open the hook when it's frozen. You have to dig out the ice with a screwdriver or your Leatherman, wire, etc. I suppose one could leave the hook open, so it freezes open and the force of the pull would close it. So it's a little PITA but the safety factor is nice. We typically use a non-stretchy strap on between the hook and the object being pulled so even a regular hook has little chance of slipping off. It has to be proper size though. Those little hooks on Warn winches suck. |
