Hey guys, I was wondering if you could answer a quick question I have. Is it normal for the coolant level in the resevoir tank to drop slightly over time. Whenever I check the coolant level after the vehicle has sat outside overnight, it appears to drop very slowly at a rate of about 2cm every 1000 miles I drive the vehicle. I have never had a vehicle in which the coolant level ever dropped unless something was leaking. I do smell a slight coolant smell from the passenger side of the vehicle every now and then, but after checking everywhere, I can't find any sign of a leak anywhere. Thanks, and it's an 03 Disco if that matters......... |

The leak is a possible porous block at the back under the bell housing. I just aquired a warrenty return block which had the same problem Your problem is not a new one and is possibly a warrantable issue. Contact your dealer.... eddie |

Also could be the radiator bottom hose connector joint (history with being bad, check for coolant on the floor) or the valley gasket could be leaking, both of these certainly warranty fixes. I think the radiator was a recall, at least on the 99 D2s. |

I just got off the phone with my dealer, and the regular service guy wasn't there. However, the service lady who is filling in for him went back to ask the techs and told me that this is normal for the Disco's to lose about a cm of coolant every 1000 miles. They said they top the coolant off on most 03 Disco's that come in for the free scheduled maintenance because they are slightly below the full mark. Any truth to this? I might call back my my regular service guy comes back from vacation as he's an amazing guy who has helped me a lot, especially during my dark days with the old lemon Freelander. |

Sorry if I'm TOO sarcastic, BUT I don't believe it's "normal". 1cm/1000mi = 1 inch/2500mi. (2.5cm=1 in.) OR 3 in. of fluid loss at 7500mi.(sched. maintenance time). I think 3 in. of fluid loss is NOT "normal" in ANY NEW vehicle. Maybe in an older vehicle with lots of summer stop & go it would be normal. Please correct me if I'm wrong. TIA |

You can't argue with math like that. I've never had coolant level drop either, unless there was a leak. You mentioned smelling coolant, its very possible you have a very minor leak in the heater core. Aren't there dyes that can be added to the coolant and checked with a flourescent light? |

Just had my 2001 Disco II in for it's 30k service. A few months prior, I'd had a rushing fluid sound in the passenger floor board and knew it was low coolant. So, I'd fill it up and it would go away. Only for a short while though. I took it to the dealer and they flushed the coolant system and said there were no problems, but I knew it was wrong. Got a call while they had it for the 30k. Said I needed a new radiator as it was leaking at a seam. (warranty, phew!) Still makes the flushing sound.. In my Porsche it goes away after the car warms up, but the Disco sounds like it has a toilet flushing. Too bad I can't write it off as a second home. Topping off the coolant like that is bogus. |

'99 DII - i had a slow leak from the throttle body (coolant flows there to keep it warm in the winter), it was roughly the same amount of leak as what you described. After driving and shutting the engine off, I could hear a slight hissing noise coming from this area. I asked the guy at the parts counter if this was a common problem and he said "we stock the part" - the gasket comes as part of a small kit (about $20) |
