I finally got my new Greg Davis rear bumper installed this week. Man, this thing is cool, and it makes a world of difference to the rear end. The red lights are hooked to the rear fog switch and match perfectly with the running lights. Rerouted the exhaust through the side panel. Resonator is gone so it now has a deep throaty sound to it. Also installed the tuffy cargo drawer. Locking straps seem to work just fine.

Pics here:
http://www.pbase.com/jamooche/after&page=all

Only problem now is that I think I may need some rear spring spacers as there is a slight sagging of the rear end. Just when I thought I was done with the truck...

Is there anyway to attach the box to the floor? I like the setup, but would not want to have to strap it down.

the box has holes in the bottom. Add bolt, use big washers, and your done. 'course you can't pull it out very easy then...

Got the cargo box from a place in OK, much cheaper.
http://www.samsoffroad.com/samsoffroadsto/Tuffy/TuffyRearStorageBoxes.htm#Please %20Specify%20Color%20when%20ordering%20if%20applicable.

I was planning to bolt it down which is the proper way, but the straps allow it to be removed when necessary. The only thing I don't like about it is that the drawer with the dividers is 87lbs (spring spacers should get rid of the slight sagging). In comparison though, TruckVaults are 150lbs. I may put some plywood over the box...when you have about 30lbs in the middle it is harder to close.

Lewis...yeah, it has mounting points and comes with grade 8 bolts, but I have to get the shop to do the drilling as the fuel tank is right under the floor...

Not to mention that I don't have the proper drill.

I've been thinking about this for a while. I want a box to be able to come in and out easy, but be super secure when its in. I was thinking rather then bolt the box down, rather use something like the hitch pin in place of a nut and bolt. Put the pin inside the box so the only way to take it out it to get inside - perferably with a lock on the outside.

If there are cargo rings, then cut slits in in the box to fit the rings, and then pad lock them from the inside.

I would use ratchet straps, IMHO they hold much better. I have some straps that look like the ones in the pic, same colour and stripe, and they didn't hold an ice chest in my Jeep in a roll over. So I just use ratchets only now.
But like they say...'it's your rig'.

Lewis, I agree, I actually don't like the look of the straps everywhere, too messy. If they didn't hold an ice chest, they certainly won't hold a full 87lb box. Yet another project to do for the truck...they just never seem to end.

jamil???

you spend all that time mounting real bike rack stuff to your lrna rack and now you use that awful tire mount bike rack?

;)

i recieved my davis rear bumper at about the same time, but then went on the road for 4 weeks, so i don't have mine on yet...good to see some additional photos though!

by the way...i am with brad too...!

I know, I know...I had to carry a step stool to put the damn bikes on the roof with the LR rack...and the was before the lift, and I'm 5'9"! Now the rack doesn't fit in the garage I park in. So I had to do a quick buy and sell on ebay. I didn't want a hitch one since I would have to stow it or swing it out every time I open the door. Rack goes back on when I move out of the city. I know it doesn't look the best, but it's by far the easiest solution.

Yeah, my sticker gets a lot of interesting comments...

!

yeah...i did the ee.com 3" ome kit on mine and today added greg's 1" spacers...so i drive REALLY, REALLY SLOWLY into my garage. in fact...i have a "WARNING, THIS VEHICLE IS 84" TALL" sitcker on the inside of the windshield to remind any valets not to drive willy nilly into any parking garages. which is pretty cool as they usually park the truck out front by the door just to be safe...so quick exits are the word of the day!

congrats on the truck...you have come a LONG way since we first chatted about bike rack stuff. good on you...

Congratulations Jamil!

I know you have weight issues, but are you still considering plywood flooring? It is simple to secure flooring to stock cargo hooks with rachet straps. Then put tie down hooks in the flooring to secure whatever is back there (even BIG stuff).

I like it that way b/c then you can take all of it in and out. I know we were joking about my practicing carrying heavy loads, but you really don't want to keep heavy loads back there unless necessary - it just sucks up gas big time ($$$$$).

I agree with the rachet straps when it comes to securing the heaviest gear. I feel that they are the safest way to go. They'd probably pull the hooks out of the truck before they'd break.

Mike, your rover looks GREAT!! I did not know you changed your profile pic! WOW!! You need to get back on the road and head toward this part of the country :-) :-)

thanks jamie!!! but i thought you were about to start your trip west!?!? i remember you had a whole list of people out this way you were going to visit! you know, it is funny, after being out on the road almost 4 weeks (mostly by myself), i was ready to come home. now that i have been home about 2 weeks, i am ready to leave again...maybe i will be out your way!

GOODY GOODY GUMDROPS!!

Bill and Rachel will be here by next weekend and much off roading, at least thru Thanksgiving. Not that I am into "looks" (as you WELL KNOW)- but, we would look hilarious traveling together: your sleek black rover and my white pigpen!! (In my goofy humor, I call it something else that starts with "p" - but, I might offend some people with the word I use for description).

I'm off to buy more cam straps

Well, obviously, since you live in the Big D, someone was just trying to keep you from getting shot at! Just joking, but MN was very bad for anybody driving a "gas guzzler" around the Twin Cities. Didn't matter what your party affilation was or what stickers you had on your SUV, it was fair game for the brainwashed college kids from U of MN. Keying, tire cutting, and broken antennas were der riguer

hey jake...you should come to a meeting one of these days. i know it would be a little drive for you, but we have a pretty good group of folks as members. regardless of the stickers on the trucks! ;)

too bad about the kids up north...

at least you have some great museums now in ft. worth...

hey jamie!

i bet your neighbors would really wonder if you had both trucks in the drive! it has been raining or grey for a week and will be the same for another...i think some florida time sounds pretty good! instead of climbing gear, i will load my 8 wt fly fishing gear and surfboards!

Actually, they'd think it was great! :-) I'm just the amusement of the neighborhood. :-) I told one of the parents that I hoped when their kids grew up -that they do not remember me as the crazy lady in the neighborhood - resonse was they won't let them remember me that way! :-) :-)

Forget the surfboard, no waves on this coast except for during hurricanes, tropical storms, and strong cold fronts. Even then, you can't call them "waves" since they are basically just a riptide above normal water level.

Need to drive to other coast to Patrick AFB for good waves. Of course on that coast you can also DRIVE on the beach -- I'd be tempted -- but, I do try to avoid salt water.

BTW, I have called my rover PI_P Mobile all in good fun (making fun of myself). Really, I think the reason I like all the stickers is b/c it reminds me of the ice cream truck when I was little.

Jamil,
Looks good so far. Only one observation to make, get rid of that shovel bungeed to that grab-handle. If you're involved in a head-on collision, that bungee cord will not hold that shovel in place. That's a big spear waiting to go through someone's head. Please, please, please take it down.

Jamie,
I will be home this weekend, that is, there is a garage and tools so I can work on the trunk. You'd be surprised how many stares I got when I was putting all my tools and gear in the box in the parking garage. Going to bolt the Tuffy box to plywood and then strap that down. That way it's very secure and still removeable.

Jeff, I still have full tow capacity with the new bumper, but I would need to get an extention piece that drops it lower to normal trailer height. Still 2" class III.

Greg,
You're not the first to yell at me about the shovel up there. I keep saying it's a temporary location, but I'm taking it down next time I drive.

Went offroading yesterday with the new setup and everything worked perfectly. Nothing was bouncing around the trunk like usual. And I didn't scrape my rear bumper on the ground at all like I used to do.

Jamil,
I think I remember you posting the details of your lights in the Greg Davis bumper, but would you mind adding the info to this thread? I'm picking my bumper up Sunday in Charlotte on the way home from SAE so I will be working on lights next week and any input is helpful!
By the way, great job!!
Thanks!

Got the lights from www.awdirect.com They are just 2" red and yellow truck-lite lights. The turn signals will blink fast afterwards as they have a different resistance but it doesn't bother me. Just drill a large hole to fit the rubber gromet in and a small hole to fish the wires through. You can use the preexisting bumper wiring. The reds are still hooked to the rear fog switch. Then connect the wiers and pop in the lights. The only hard part is to make sure you drill in the right place.

I am just curious, what is involved in rerouting your exhaust pipe thru the quarter panel?? New exhaust resonator, relocation of some parts or just some elbow...

Pascal,
Cut the resonator off and find an appropriate curved pipe that will route it out the side. Cut a hole in the panel and weld in te pipe. I have to make it a bit more secure...on hard acceleration it vibrates on the panel a bit. But that's it.

Cool...I suggested putting rubber around it and my guy at the shop said it would just melt it. Love to know what I could put there. The noise is a more deep throaty sound...that's a good thing as I think it sounds much cooler now. But it's not obnoxious like one of those pompous show trucks. I don't think the emissions will change. I believe the resonator was just for sound control and not any emissions reduction.

Hey Jamil, were did you take those most recent photos on your web site (Nov. 9)? Looks like some power lines and I was just wondering if they are close seeing as I live in the Boston area. By the way, your rig looks sweet. Did you have all that work done at Cityside? It was reccommended to me by a friend with a D-90 and I think I am going to go there for any non-warranty work ( I still have about a year left.)Are they any good?

Christian,
Power line area was in RI about an hour from Boston. The guy who owns the land was our host. Cityside is by far the best garage in the area and they have done all my work. They really take the time to do things right and explain to me what they are doing.
