Hi guys.

A friend of mine has a 96 D1 and blew up his water pump Friday. Where is the best place to get one? We live in Traverse City Michigan and other that getting one from the what are the options.

Since it is a regular engin would NAPA or Autozone, Pep Boys ect... carry them and what part # would it be under? would it be under a buick engin part number or what.

I am assuming that some of you have replaced pumps before and might know some cost saving information.

Thanks
Ross Thoma

Get in touch with Nathan Crabtree and order one. I did this and it didn't take too long.

A search through the archives for "water pump replacement" or similar phrases will return how to's on replacing it yourselves...or try a British auto service shop -- I did a quick search on the TC Yellow Pages and did find one "foreign" auto service shop, here are the details:

Worldwide Foreign Auto Repair
2801 Garfield Road N
Traverse City, MI 49686
(231) 932-2222

Here's a map:

Not sure if they'll work on a Rover, but it's better than towing to Detroit or Portage to the dealer.

I also just searched in Petoskey, and found:

Doug's Import Service
2529 Atkins Road
Petosky, MI 49770
(231) 347-6341

Again, they may not want to turn a wrench on a Rover, but they list MB, VW, Saab, Volvo, etc. so a phone call might be worth it.

I hope this helps -- remember to get the gasket too when you order the pump!

I got mine from britishpacific.com - they are in CA, but shipping VERY promptly. So its pretty good choice for me. Pump came with new gasket in 3 days :-) Was around 120$.

As of installation
- take fan off
- take belt off (or vice versa. Depends on if you got thin wrench or not to lower tensioner)
- unscrew pulley. To prevent it from rotating while unscrewing - you might want to loosen all bolts while blocking rotation with good sturdy screwdriver.
- thats the moment where you got access to all hooses. Drain radiator, take hoose of the pump.
- unscrew all bolts from pump. If you not trusting your memory - mark where all bolts came from. 3 of them will be longer than other 6. And they got bigger head sizes.
- take pump off. I needed to whack mine with hammer, it was nearly welded :-)
- enjoy extra coolant splash..
- take old gasket off. COMPLETELY. Might use some paint remover, but make sure to not get it on any non metal parts around - namely hooses. Do do any heavy scrubbing, you dont want leaks later on - be patient, let remover to eat damn thing.
- put new gasket onto new pump, getting almost all or all bolts through holes. Thats way you wont need to align gasket and curse afterwards :-)
- screw all bolts by hand, then slowly screw entire set in pattern similar to how you tighten lug nuts. That way you can be sure its all aligned and pushed properly.
- put pump hoose on.
- flush radiator with gardening hoose, run motor. That will ensure that water pocket gone.. drain water, put hoose back, fill.. blah blah..

Its very easy except for the part where you remove old gasket.
