Which of above is the more likely?

 vehicle: '95 Disco V8i auto

 symptoms, in order of concern:
 1. poor fuel cons (13mpg)
 2. normally needs 2 cranks before it will start
 3. stutters slightly, infrequently (every 100mi maybe) during cruising

 other info:
 a. tail pipe burns healthy grey
 b. no clouds coming from exhaust
 c. odo 120k miles
 d. service history unknown
 e. vacuum advance unit out of order

Some ideas of how to work through this please!

I'm not saying it is your fuel pump, but I had the exact same symptoms on my 96 and after troubleshooting, found my pump was bad. Changed it, everything was right with the world again.

You might want to search the boards on how to test and troubleshoot fuel pressure problems, there were several threads that helped me isolate it.

Assuming your fuel pressure is ok, I would firstly give it a basic tune-up. Stuttering can be faulty plug wires (leads in UK English). I have had this before.

On the rough starting, other than the ignition tune-up, suspect clogged fuel injectors and intake valves. Buildup on the valves soaks up the initial fuel during startup.

I used some Lucas fuel treatment and was shocked at how much better my Rangie started running (117K miles). I think BG44K would be the best choice - available at GM and some BMW dealers in the US. Miss at idle disappeared and fuel economy up 1+ mpg.

Plug leads are new, fuel filter too.

For a start I'll use BG44K, and have fuel pump tested by some auto-elec place.

Recalculated fuel cons (used to L/100km in SouthAfrica): 11.0mpg !!! (Can anybody match that? :-/ ) Both my previous Discos did 16mpg...
