Which of above is the more likely?

vehicle: '95 Disco V8i auto

symptoms, in order of concern:
1. poor fuel cons (13mpg)
2. normally needs 2 cranks before it will start
3. stutters slightly, infrequently (every 100mi maybe) during cruising

other info:
a. tail pipe burns healthy grey
b. no clouds coming from exhaust
c. odo 120k miles
d. service history unknown
e. vacuum advance unit out of order

Some ideas of how to work through this please!

Replace vac advance diaphram, this will improve mpg. Run some injector cleaner and check/replace plugs, leads and an other ignition part that looks suspect.

I'd be weary about running injector cleaner. If you suspect your injectors are faulty or clogged, pull them and get them serviced or replaced.

I have a new fuel pump, a new fuel pressure regulators, and I have recently pulled all injectors and had them serviced by Rich at cruzinperformance.com and I still have the double crank issue every once and awhile.

I also have a new stepper motor for what it's worth. I do know, however, that my vacuum advance is not working on my distributor.

Let me know if you need any info.

Firstly, apologies for accidentally posting original message twice - now there are 2 threads.

following are ok:
. new air filter
. new plug leads

priorities (thanks all):

. try some injector cleaner
. temporarily plug vacuum point on plenum (see next point on list)
. replace faulty vac advance, unplug vacuum
. clean stepper
. replace fuel pressure regulator
. CO analysis
. refurb injectors

will keep you posted

Ok my 2 cents on the above.

It's never a bad idea to make sure your ignition system is working fine. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor, also replaced the coil, and all spark plugs / leads from the distributor.

The vacuum advance is a vacuum diaphram on the side of the distributor that does something magical. Now, depending on who you talk to, that magical thing is either _very_ important, or not important at all. The consensus I got, was that it comes into play only while decelerating, but that doesnt make sense to me, so maybe someone can enlighten us all.

Ok, now to the main points. Fuel injector cleaner did squat for me, and since I was having so many problems, I took it to an import shop that works on rovers. The unhooked the fuel lines at the fuel pump and ran their special cleaning system, where it pumps cleaners through the injectors, and catches the debris / cleaner on return (ie doenst go to the tank). This actually made the problem much worse. Before this, I could actually drive my car, and 1 day after they "flushed" the system, my car wouldnt run well. What happened was the cleaner they used, did it's job so well it loosened all the rust on one of my injectors and completly clogged the port :-)

So, I would suggest if you suspect your injectors are in need of some TLC (which they will be, trust me. I have 150k miles on my D1, and I have some pics of the rust in the fuel rails), just take the couple of days it'll take to pull the injectors and send them off. If you live in a metropoltin area or a large city, you might check with the injector shops around the town and see if they can service Bosch or Lucas injectors.

Cleaning the stepper didnt seem to help with my idle problem, a new one is 30 bucks.

Pressure regulator. This was the problem in my system, this is what finally got my fuel system to hold pressure (go figure it wasnt the 300 fuel pump). I tried a cheaper one (25 bucks) from an auto parts store that was identical dimensions and shape, but it did not work. I ended up buying a land rover OEM one for about 80 bucks and this got the problem solved.

Hope some of my service woes helps you in whatever you do.

Guys
vacuum advance diapram will give a different amount of ignition advance depending on manifold vac. So at constant road speed it will advance the timing. As the load increases the vac drops so the advance is less. Under hard throttle there is no advance because there is no vac. Advance has 2 effects 1st engine runns cooler 2nd reduces fuel consumtion. These diaphrams are always stuffed on Disco's. I always change them, it does make a differance.

Where is the pressure regulator?

My mpg's just dropped from 300 mi/tank to 250. Could the vacuum advance help this?

The pressure regulator sits at one end of the fuel rail, where the injectors attach. It's about the size of a can of coke, cut in half and has a vacuum line coming out the rear of it.
