What's the preferred snowboard carrying set-up for the DII? I'm thinking of getting the LR OEM Crossbars and then purchasing Thule or Yakima racks(I hope these racks will fit the LR Crossbars?). I'm going with the factory crossbars, as I think the Thule and Yakima racks are aren't streamlined and don't look as good as the factory. What are everyone's thoughts? And also, Yakima or Thule? thanks

Mark,

I had the Yakima set up on mine before I went crazy with the rack and lights. I did not use LR OEM crossbars; instead I used the 48" tubes from Yak which held 2 bike trays and a Powderhound Snowboard / ski holder.

IMHO, these guys are the best for racks:

I took an old rooftop Barecrafter ski rack that I purchased in high school and welded it to a custom bracket that attached to the spare tire. I think I spent about $25 in steel and 2 afternoons. Nice to not have to climb up top to access your gear. (The angle irons were replaced later with some small straps, they have no function.)

I love Yakima, backcountrystore.com seems to have good prices. If you want to use the factory side rails go with the Yakima lowrider backets. I don't know if you also need a bike rack but another option is get a Yakima rack that mounts in the hitch, and then buy the snow board/ski attachment.

If the D2 crossbars are removable like the D1 you are better off not using them. First, anybody can take them off and steal your goodies. Second, they vibrate a lot. You will also need an adapter for the racks to fit properly.

You are better off buying crossbars from Thule or Yakima that attach directly to the rails. This is a much more secure setup and they will be locked. I prefer Thule but most of my friends use Yakima.

not sure if the DII is different from the DI in terms of rail height and roof shape, but I have the yakima high risers and powder hound on my DI and the high risers are not tall enough to clear the rear of the stock mounted rails. the "tongue" things that stick out the back that move when tightened also will stick into the glass or roof if you mount them behind the rails. copy and paste this link to see about the only place the yak high risers will fit on a DI: http://cloud.prohosting.com/~rbd4a/Side%20View.jpg
I have heard that the Thule high risers or whatever they are called are taller and fit. If you want to use Yak, I would get the mounts that attach directly to the mounted rails (not the rails that go in between that cross the roof though. those are way too flimsy).

I have the Thule 415 railing foot pack (attach to the factory rails) with 48 inch rails and 725 ski/snowboard attachments. TONS better than the stock ones (which I wanted to use to save some cash, but decided they're way too flimsy and I didn't want my $1000 snowboard flying off the car). The Thule ski attachments actually fit onto the stock crossbars without an adapter if you really want to use them, but I was told my a lot of people not to risk it.

So the $150 I spent is well worth it. I do get some wind noise with just the bars on though, and was told the truck is too high for a fairing? Any suggestions?

Oh, and also if you park in underground/covered garages, you might have some clearance issues sometimes.... I take my racks off whenever not in use because it's annoying not being to park in a lot of places (in Seattle atleast)

Epuffy .... go with the Yakima, lower clearance issues than Thule, Thule is like 2inches taller. When looking for a fairing, get the "Van" size and it won't look stupid, call Greg's Greenlake or check ebay as there hard to find right now... i'm from Bellevue/Redmond, God I miss it!

Eric-

the Thule 415 doesn't come with the crossbars right? I was thinking about the 752 Rapid Railing Carrier, it's a whole package, mounts and bars. It's essentially all one piece and attaches/detaches in seconds from the roof rails.

Also, you have the 725 ski rack. Can you attach TWO on each crossbar, or only one because of it's length and ability to carry 6 pairs of skis?

Speaking of snowboards, I'm a huge boarder. I'm currently riding a Palmer Honeypro and K2 Zeppelin, both with Ride Team bindings, both boards are awesome. I'm trying to get my hands on the new Palmer Crown - IMO now the best and best crafted board in its category. What are you riding?

Patrick-

I've been scrutinizing both the Thule and Yakima racks. Here's why I have chosen Thule over Yakima. First, both brands make really high quality products and are both leaders in the industry. For the Crossbar system, Yakima requires you to purchase each componenet(Mount, Bars, Locks) seperately at outrageous prices! Whereas, Thule makes the Rapid Railing Carrier ( http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?dept_id=2&sku=751xt )which is the mount, bar, and lock all built together as one piece. Also, it installs and removes from the roof rails very fast. Price of this is a significantly less than the total of all the Yakima components needed to match the Thule carrier.

When you suggested the Yakima, I believe you are referring to the Lowrider mount. Seeing both the Thule Rapid Railing and Yakima Lowrider, the height is very very close. If the Thule is taller it's no more than 3/4 of an inch taller.

Mark-

ya, i was speaking about the 'full' rack system, attaching the rack to the rain gutters, just because i've seen factory rack's fail before on a number of different vehicles. the thule tower rack is significantly taller than yakima when using the towers ... and if i fold my fork mounts back i can usually go into most covered parking garages in DC ... hope that helps!
towers-

Pic is from the condo in Dillon,CO facing Brekenridge. Yes, even this rack is susseptable to underground parking. The skis skis stick above everything about a foot. Tie a string to your finger if you have too.

Hey Patrick,

I checked out the Yakima lowriders, and they seem about the same height as the Yakima 415 foot pack I got. You sure you know which ones they are?

Mark,

The crossbars don't come with the 415 foot pack, but I got the foots, crossbars with locks from a used sporting goods store for $40 bucks! Lucky eh?

If you want the whole package ones I think you need the 754XT's, I don't think the 752XT's are long enough, or I was told. They cost a bundle though, even on eBay. Look for a cheap set of used feet and bars, they work the same anyways. I'm pretty sure 2 sets of 725 ski holders aren't going to fit. Maybe you can stick (2) 724's on there, but not worth the extra money to hold just one extra board I bet. I figure i'd never really need to hold more than 4 boards (I think it holds 4) anyways.

I like Thule better because I think the square bars make more sense and seem sturdier to me. The ski attachments are silver colored and look better than the Yakima's IMHO. Both cost about the same anyways.

I ride a Nitro Shogun from last year. Awesome board, but shit expensive. But shit fast! haha. I heard the Zeppelin's are awesome, stiff and fast too. Don't know much about Palmers though, but there was one that was pretty raved about last year right? Where are you abouts? Can't wait for ski season to start!

For clearance issues, I've got a 1 inch lift with LR Heavy Duty's, and it seems like i'm pretty much at the max height for many places (like at my offices parking garage). I have this fear i'm going to fly into a garage forgetting I have a fairly tall truck.

Anyone done that before?

Eric- I'm in LA, I take every opportunity to go snowboarding. Palmer's are VERY nice boards, amazingly crafted, the technology and attention to detail is unmatched. Super expensive, rare, and demanded by the hardcore boarders. Ride one if you get a chance.

Thule also makes the Snowcat (http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?dept_id=9&sku=5400) which is an all the above we've been discussing plus the ski racks ALL IN ONE. quite interesting, but I want to know the reputation behind that thing.
