Semper Fi,
I always like the thought that we've had one year of history that we've repeated 228 times now.

WAY proud of all our forces. Soft spot for the Marines - talk about leading the way -- Special Ops WAY BEFORE the term was "popular" and "ccol" (just my opinion).

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps! "
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem. "
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985

Semper Fi Marines and Happy 228th! Always a day late and a dollar short...

Obie, you stole my favorite line from our greatest President (but here's another):

"Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it were some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their Commandant almost as if he were a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest sons of bitches I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and, generally speaking, the United States Marines I've come in contact with are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have ever had the pleasure to meet."
--An Anonymous Canadian Citizen

Happy Veterans Day to all Vets and thank you for your service to our country!

Been busy, Just got an opportunity to touch base. Over the last week I have bumped into Marine after Marine and each talked about how everytime they saw some young jarhead on the news, no mater how tired or filthy, he took pride in the hard life, the dangers they faced together, and the desire they had to rejoin their unit if wounded. They had a heck of a problem with guys leaving the field hospitals and hitch hiking bck to the lines. If any of us had doubted whether those who have taken the bayonet from the "old Corps" and moved forward must know that they have done so well, that the the entire Marine Expeditionary Force will recieve the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC). The largest force ever to be so awarded.

Semper Fi lads!

SUBJ/228TH BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS//

RMKS/1. THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE THE 228TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF OUR CORPS. AS ALWAYS, IT IS AN OCCASION FOR REMEMBRANCE, PROUD TRADITIONS, AND JOYFUL CAMARADERIE. THE EVENTS OF THE PAST YEAR HAVE CALLED FOR GREAT SACRIFICES FROM MANY MARINES AND THEIR FAMILIES. WHILE THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM WILL CONTINUE TO DEMAND THE BEST FROM EACH OF US, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE JOIN WITH OUR FELLOW MARINES, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TO CELEBRATE OUR CORPS' SPECIAL CULTURE AND UNIQUE WARRIOR ETHOS.

2. THIS PAST YEAR, MARINES DEMONSTRATED ONCE AGAIN THAT THEY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ENTITY ON ANY BATTLEFIELD. LETHAL WEAPONS AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES PROVIDE US UNIQUE ADVANTAGES, BUT EDUCATED WARRIORS ULTIMATELY DETERMINE VICTORY IN COMBAT, NOT MACHINES. DURING PERATIONS IRAQI FREEDOM AND ENDURING FREEDOM, OUR SMALL UNIT LEADERS' SKILLS, ADAPTABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY PRODUCED VICTORY ON UNCERTAIN AND AT TIMES CHAOTIC BATTLEFIELDS. WE PROVED ONCE AGAIN THE POWER OF INTEGRATED GROUND-AIR-LOGISTICS TEAMS AS WELL AS THE IMPORTANCE OF EVERY MARINE BEING FIRST AND FOREMOST A RIFLEMAN.

3. OUR SPECIAL SPIRIT IS EVIDENT NOT ONLY IN BATTLE; IT IS EVIDENT IN THE FAITHFUL PERFORMANCE OF DEMANDING DUTIES BY COUNTLESS MARINES AT HOME AND ABROAD. EVERY MARINE MAKES A VITAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE ABILITY OF OUR CORPS TO PROJECT AND SUSTAIN CREDIBLE COMBAT POWER. MOREOVER, THE WILLINGNESS AND READINESS OF ALL MARINES TO ACCEPT AND ACCOMPLISH ANY MISSION IS CENTRAL TO OUR SUCCESS AND A HALLMARK OF OUR WARRIOR ETHOS.

4. THE CULTURE THAT DEFINES THE MARINE CORPS IS NURTURED BY OUR TRADITIONS. IN CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE, WE STRENGTHEN THE LINKAGES TO A GLORIOUS HISTORY AND RECOMMIT OURSELVES TO UPHOLDING THE STANDARDS AND VALUES GIVEN TO US BY PAST GENERATIONS.

5. IN COMMEMORATING OUR 228TH ANNIVERSARY, REMAIN TRUE TO THE SPIRIT OF THE OCCASION. REFLECT ON OUR FALLEN WITH DEEP RESPECT, OBSERVE OUR TRADITIONS WITH JUSTIFIABLE PRIDE, TAKE CARE OF ONE ANOTHER, AND OF OURSE, CELEBRATE THOSE SPECIAL BONDS THAT EXIST AMONG UNITED STATES MARINES.

6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES, SEMPER FIDELIS, AND KEEP ATTACKING! M. W. HAGEE, GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS, COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS.//

Obviously I had some time on my hands to day. :-)

-EDITED OF SOME HARSH LANGUAGE-
Quotes from the Army about Marines

If I were King, I'd close Army entry training and send all future Infantry grunts to the Marines. The Corps still produces trained and disciplined soldiers who still know how to fight and make it on a killing field.
--Col David Hackworth, USA Army (Ret),one of Americas most highly decorated soldier-
http://www.hackworth.com/

We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing.
What the hell is going on?
Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., USA, Chairman of the the Joint Chiefs of Staff; during the assault on Grenada, 1983

The Corps, which has never lost sight that its primary mission is to fight, remains superbly trained and disciplined -- true to its time-honored slogan "We don't promise a rose garden." When, under Clinton, the Army lowered its standards to Boy Scout summer-camp level in order to increase enlistment, the Corps responded by making boot training longer and tougher
-Col David Hackworth, US Army-

After the Rangers' disaster in Somalia -- where there were no tanks to break through to relieve them -- and the embarrassment of not being able to fight in the war in Serbia, Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki started forming light brigades strikingly similar to USMC units. When I asked, "Why the copycating?" an Army officer said: "It was either copy or go out of business.
-Col David Hackworth, US Army-

The Marine Corps is the only outfit in Clinton's armed forces
that can still fight the hard fight.
-Col Davd Hackworth, US Army-
First the "feminnazis" integrated Air Force basic training, then the Army went coed, while the Navy, in
an attempt to deflect the bad press from Tailhook, surrendered in 1994.
But the Corps stood tall and said "No way. Won't work. And now the Corps can say "I told you so."
-Col David Hackworth, US Army-

The Marines keep their standards up and their leadership is dynamite! It is the same kind of leadership we have seen throughout the Marines' history, and they are not lowering the bar. They are increasing the bar, and they have long lines of people who want to join the Marine Corps
-Col David Hackworth, US Army-

"Why the hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can; they are all the same kind of men...
why can't the Army be like the Marines?"
--Commander in Chief, AEF, General John Pershing, U.S. Army

"Your Marines having been under my command for nearly six months, I feel that I can give you a discriminating report as to their excellent standing with their brothers of the army and their general good conduct."
-General John J. Pershing, US Army-

"I am so proud of 'ya," the general told the leathernecks. "It is such an honor for me to be just be standing here with you."God bless all of you. God bless the Corps, the mission, and God bless the United States of America."
--Army General Tommy Franks--
"I can't say enough about the two Marine divisions.
If I use words like 'brilliant,' it would really be an under description of the absolutely superb job that they did in breaching the so-called 'impenetrable barrier.' It was a classic-absolutely classic-military breaching of a very, very tough minefield, barbed wire, fire trenches-type barrier."
- Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, Commander, U.S. Central Command, February 1991

"I can never again see a UNITED STATES MARINE without
experiencing a feeling of reverence."
-GEN. JOHNSON, US.ARMY-

"I want you boys to hurry up and whip these Germans so we can get out to the Pacific to kick the s### out of the purple-peeing Japanese, before the G##### MARINES get all the credit!"
-Lt General George Patton, US Army 1945

"The American Marines have it (pride), and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it."
--Major General Hagood, U.S. Army

"I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world."
- General Douglas MacArthur, U.S. Army

"The amphibious (Marine) landing is the most powerful tool we have."
General Douglas MacArthur

"I know that this operation will be sort of helter-skelter.
But the 1st Marine Division is going to win the war by landing at Inchon."
General Douglas MacArthur

"these Marines have the swagger, confidence, and hardness that must have been in Stonewall Jackson's Army of the Shenandoah. They remind me of the Coldstreams at Dunkerque."
General Douglas MacArthur

"The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight."
- Major General Frank Lowe, U.S. Army

"The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle."
- General Pershing, U.S. Army

"Lying offshore, ready to act, the presence of ships and Marines sometimes means much more than just having air power or ship's fire, when it comes to deterring a crisis. And the ships and Marines may not have to do anything but lie offshore. It is hard to lie offshore with a C-141 or C-130 full of airborne troops."
- Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA

The Marines are careful, brave fighter..they were lion hunters, boring in relentlessly without fear. I never heard a wounded Marine moan.
The U.S. Army General Staff

"The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it."
- General Mark Clark, U.S. Army

"The 1st Marine Division is the most efficient and courageous
combat unit I have ever seen or heard of."
- Major General Frank E. Lowe , US Army , 1950

"No one can say that the Marines have failed to do their work in handsome fashion."
- Major General Hagood, U.S. Army

"The Marines and Navy have never shone more brightly than this morning."
- Gen Douglas MacArthur at Inchon landing, Korean War

"The more Marines I have around, the better I like it."
- General Clark, U.S. Army

The man who will go where his colors will go, without asking, who will fight a phantom foe in a jungle and mountain range, without counting, and who will suffer and die in the midst of incredible hardship, without complaint, is still what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to Democratic America. He is the stuff of which legions are made. His pride is his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thorough and coldly realistic, to fit him for what he must face, and his obedience is to his orders. As a legionary, he held the gates of civilization for the classical world...he has been called United States Marine.
Lieutenant Colonel T.R. Fehrenbach, US Army in "This Kind of War"

Quotes from the Navy about Marines

"I should deem a man-of-war incomplete without a body of Marines...imbued with that esprit
that has so long characterized the 'Old Corps'."
--Commodore Joshua R. Sands, U.S. Navy

"There is no military body in our country of higher efficiency than the Marine Corps. They take great pride in their profession. They never let things slack a bit."
- Rear Admiral C.M. Wilslow, U.S. Navy

"You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are."
- Father Kevin Keaney, 1st MarDiv Chaplain, Korean War

"The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, 'The elite of this country. I think it is the elite of the world."
- Admiral William Halsey, U.S. Navy

Marines know how to use their bayonets. Army bayonets may as well be paper-weights.
[Navy Times; November 1994]

"The amphibious landing of U.S. Marines on September 1950 at Inchon, on the west coast of Korea, was one of the most audacious and spectacularly successful amphibious landings in all naval history."
Bernard Brodie, A Guide to Naval Strategy

"By their victory, the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions and other units of the Fifth Amphibious Corps have made an accounting to their country which only history will be able to value fully. Among the American who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue."
- Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Navy

"A ship without Marines is like a garment without buttons."
- Admiral David Dickson Porter

The first reason I like Marines: They set high standards for themselves
and those around them, and will accept nothing less.
I like the way Marines march.
I like the way Marines do their basic training whether it's Quantico, Parris Island, or San Diego.
I like the idea that Marines cultivate an ethos conductive of producing hard people in a soft age.
I like the fact that Marines stay in shape.
I like the fact that the Marines only have one boss - the Commandant.
And I like the directness of the Commandant.
I like the fact that Marines are stubborn.
I like the way Marines obey orders.
I like the way Marines make the most of the press.
I like the wholehearted professionalism of the Marines.
It occurred to me that the services could be characterized by different breeds of dogs.
The Air Force reminded me of a French Poodle. The poodle always looks perfect...sometimes a bit pampered and always travels first class. But don't ever forget that the poodle was bred as a hunting dog and in a fight it's very dangerous.
The Army is kind of like a St. Bernard. It's big and heavy and sometimes seems a bit clumsy. But it's very powerful and has lots of stamina. So you want it for the long haul.
The Navy, God bless us, is a Golden Retriever. They're good natured and great around the house. The kids love' em. Sometimes their hair is a bit long.... they go wandering off for long periods of time, and they love water.
Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans,
because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean or skinny and mean.
They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat. That sounds like a Marine to me! So what I really like about Marines is that first to fight isn't just a motto, it's a way of life. From the day they were formed at Tun Tavern 221 years ago, Marines have distinguished themselves on battlefields around the world. From the fighting tops of the Bonhomme Richard, to the sands of Barbary coast, from the swamps of New Orleans to the halls of Montezuma, from Belleau Wood, to the Argonne Forest, to Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima, and Okinawa and Inchon, and Chosin Reservoir and Hue City and Quang Tri and Dong Ha, and Beirut, and Grenada, and Panama, and Somalia and Bosnia and a thousand unnamed battlefields in godforsaken corners of the globe. Marines have distinguished themselves by their bravery, and stubbornness and aggressive spirit, and sacrifice,
and love of country, and loyalty to one another.
They've done it for you and me, and this country we all love so dearly.
They asked for nothing more than the honor of being a United States Marine.

That's why I like Marines
- Rear Admiral J. Stark, USN, President of the Naval War College, made in Newport, Rhode Island -

Quotes by Marines

"My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost."
- 2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

"Our Country won't go on forever, if we stay as soft as we are now. There won't be any America - because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race."
--Lieutenant General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller
"They're on our right, they're on our left, they're in front of us, they're behind us; they can't get away from us this time."
- Chesty Puller, USMC, Chosin Reservoir, Korean War
"We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them."
- Chesty Puller at the Chosin Reservoir

When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his artillerymen, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them." Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight." At Koto-ri in Korea
- Chesty Puller at Koto-ri in Korea

"The mail service has been excellent out here, and in my opinion this is all that the Air Force has accomplished during the war."
- Chesty Puller in a letter to his wife while in Korea

"Don't forget that you're First Marines! Not all the Communists in hell can overrun you!"
- Chesty Puller motivating his men at Chosin Reservoir
Old breed? New breed? There's not a damn bit of difference so long as it's the Marine breed.
- Chesty Puller, USMC

"Remember, whatever you write, this was no retreat. All that happened was that we found more Chinese behind us than in front of us, so we about-faced and attacked."
- Chesty Puller, USMC, speaking to reporters after the battle out of the Chosin Reservoir, Korean War
Three Marine Principles of NCO Leadership:
First, be technically tactically proficient...
Secondly, know your men and look out for their welfare...
Thirdly, and most importantly, you must set the example.
Colonel Chesty Puller
Take me to the Brig. I want to see the "real Marines".
Major General Chesty Puller, USMC - while on a Battalion inspection.
We tell our Marines that they are going to go through hell. But we tell them too, that whatever they are called upon to do, it will be no worse than Marines have done before. We try to teach them that it is a proud, a glorious thing, to fight as Marines have always fought.
And above all, we teach them that there are some things worse than wounds or death.
Major General Lewis "Chesty" Puller
Remember that there is no substitute for performance of duty whether you are a statesman or a fighting man and that there must be character and integrity at all times.

We make Marines, and we win battles.
Gen. - Charles C. Krulak, USMC (CMC); 5 May 1997 -

I've always been proud of being a Marine. I won't hesitate to defend the Corps.
Jonathan Winters, Comic Television star

I did learn discipline and a strong feeling about defending my country.

Every Marine is, first and foremost, a rifleman. All other conditions are secondary
General A. M. Gray, USMC
Ensure that no Marine who honorably wore the eagle, globe and anchor is lost to the Marine Corps family.
